Design Engineer - Iron & Steel Bricks Expert
Role
As a global leader in refractory solutions, with Iron & Steel business at the heart of what we do, we are looking for an experienced Refractory Design Engineer to join our Budapest team. You will bring deep brick engineering expertise in iron and steel applications and technical precision.
This is an individual contributor role with real ownership: you will run your own projects end-to-end, from technical drawings and heat transfer calculations through to commercial offer documentation, working closely with sales, application engineers and installation teams across EMEA.
Responsibilities
Technical Design & Engineering
- Independently prepare and validate technical drawings for refractory brick linings in iron and steel vessels (ladles, EAF, BOF, degassers and related equipment)
- Carry out quantity calculations, heat transfer analyses and thermal expansion calculations to a high level of accuracy
- Ensure all design documentation meets Calderys quality standards and project deadlines
Commercial Support
- Contribute to the preparation of technical offers and tender documentation, translating engineering designs into clear, compelling commercial proposals
- Support the sales team with technical input during customer engagement and project scoping
Project Ownership
- Manage your assigned projects independently from kick-off to delivery, keeping stakeholders informed and timelines on track
- Coordinate with cross-functional teams (sales, operations, site supervisors) to ensure seamless execution
- Conduct occasional site visits in Hungary and abroad to support installation and verify design implementation
Requirements
Experience & Expertise
- Minimum 5 years of hands-on refractory engineering experience, with a strong focus on brick applications in iron and steel
- Deep technical knowledge of brick lining design in molten metal vessels: ladles, EAF, BOF, degassers and similar equipment
- Solid grounding in monolithic refractory engineering is a strong advantage — our projects often combine both technologies
Technical Skills
- Proficient in 2D CAD (AutoCAD) — essential
- MS Office suite (Excel, Word) and OneDrive — essential
- 3D CAD experience, specifically PTC Creo — a significant advantage
- Ability to produce and interpret heat transfer and thermal expansion calculations independently
Languages
- English at a working professional level (written and spoken) — essential for daily interaction with our international teams
- Additional languages (German, French, Turkish or other EMEA languages) are a genuine advantage given our regional scope
Soft Skills
- Rigorous and detail-oriented
- Comfortable managing multiple projects simultaneously without losing accuracy
- Collaborative by nature, confident in your technical opinions, and able to communicate complex engineering concepts clearly to non-specialists
- Willing to travel occasionally for site visits and client meetings
As a global organisation operating across multiple countries, compensation for this role may vary depending on location, local market benchmarks, and experience.
In line with our commitment to pay transparency, a salary range relevant to your location will be shared with you during the early stages of the recruitment process, before any interview is scheduled.
