General Summary of Position:

The Director of Technology Architecture is a senior technical leadership role responsible for defining, governing, and advancing the architecture of the organization’s network and technology solutions. This position leads a technical engineering team responsible for network design, automation, solution templatization, engineering standards, and senior-level technical support.

The Director will establish architectural direction and ensure that solutions are scalable, repeatable, supportable, secure, and aligned with business and customer requirements. This role works closely with Engineering, Product Management, Operations, Software Development, Security, Sales Engineering, and other technology teams to translate business requirements into standardized technical solutions and operational capabilities.

The ideal candidate combines deep networking expertise with a strong understanding of automation, APIs, infrastructure standards, and modern engineering practices. The Director will also serve as a senior technical authority for complex customer environments, emerging technologies, and critical escalations.

Responsibilities

  • Define and maintain the organization’s network and technology architecture, including reference architectures, engineering standards, design patterns, configuration standards, and technical roadmaps.
  • Lead the design and architecture of enterprise network solutions across LAN, WAN, SD-WAN, SASE, Internet, cloud connectivity, wireless, cellular, security, and other emerging network technologies.
  • Drive automation across the engineering and deployment lifecycle, including configuration generation, provisioning, validation, testing, monitoring, troubleshooting, and integration with external platforms through APIs.
  • Establish and maintain reusable templates, standardized configurations, and modular technical designs that reduce customization, improve deployment consistency, and enable solutions to scale efficiently.
  • Lead technical evaluations of new technologies, vendors, platforms, and product capabilities, ensuring architectural decisions consider scalability, resiliency, security, supportability, performance, and operational complexity.
  • Serve as the senior technical authority and escalation point for complex engineering challenges, major customer-impacting incidents, cross-platform issues, and high-profile customer environments.
  • Lead root cause analysis for significant technical issues and translate recurring operational challenges into architectural, engineering, automation, or process improvements.
  • Lead, mentor, and develop a team of network engineers, architects, and technical specialists while establishing technical ownership, engineering quality standards, peer-review practices, and career development opportunities.
  • Partner with Product Management, Software Engineering, Network Operations, Security, Service Delivery, and Sales Engineering to translate business and customer requirements into scalable technical solutions and platform capabilities.
  • Establish metrics and continuous-improvement programs that measure architecture quality, engineering productivity, automation adoption, deployment efficiency, configuration accuracy, platform reliability, and overall technical performance.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, Engineering, Telecommunications, or a related technical discipline, or equivalent professional experience.
  • 10+ years of experience in network engineering, network architecture, infrastructure engineering, or a related technical field.
  • 5+ years of experience in a senior technical leadership, architecture, or engineering management role.
  • Deep knowledge of enterprise networking technologies and architectures, including routing, switching, WAN, Internet connectivity, VPNs, and network resiliency.
  • Strong understanding of routing protocols and technologies including BGP, OSPF, IP addressing, route redistribution, and network segmentation.
  • Experience designing and supporting large-scale, multi-site enterprise networks.
  • Experience with SD-WAN and software-defined networking technologies.
  • Strong understanding of network security concepts including firewalls, segmentation, secure remote access, VPN technologies, and zero-trust principles.
  • Demonstrated experience developing engineering standards, reference architectures, configuration standards, or reusable technical designs.
  • Experience implementing or leading network automation initiatives.
  • Working knowledge of APIs, scripting, and automation concepts using technologies such as Python, REST APIs, JSON, YAML, Git, or similar tools.
  • Experience integrating network platforms with automation, orchestration, monitoring, or enterprise management systems.
  • Demonstrated ability to troubleshoot complex network and infrastructure issues across multiple technologies and vendors.
  • Experience leading major technical escalations and root cause analysis efforts.
  • Strong understanding of monitoring, telemetry, logging, and network observability concepts.
  • Proven ability to lead and develop highly technical engineering teams.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills with the ability to communicate complex technical concepts to executive, business, and technical audiences.
  • Demonstrated ability to work across engineering, operations, product, security, software development, and customer-facing organizations.

Preferred Qualifications

  • 15+ years of experience in networking, telecommunications, infrastructure engineering, or technology architecture.
  • Experience within a telecommunications provider, managed service provider, cloud provider, or large distributed enterprise environment.
  • Advanced experience with SD-WAN and SASE platforms.
  • Experience with technologies from vendors such as Cisco, Cisco Meraki, Fortinet, Palo Alto Networks, Juniper, Cradlepoint/Ericsson, VMware/VeloCloud, or similar platforms.
  • Experience architecting solutions incorporating broadband, DIA, MPLS, LTE/5G, private networking, and multiple WAN technologies.
  • Experience with cellular networking, wireless WAN, and multi-carrier architectures.
