Engineering Technician - Cranes
DP World are recruiting for an experienced and technically skilled Engineering Technician to join our Cranes Engineering team in Southampton. This role is responsible for the planned maintenance, fault diagnosis, and repair of port cranes and associated equipment, ensuring assets operate safely, reliably, and efficiently. The successful candidate will work in a fast-paced port environment, responding to breakdowns, carrying out preventative maintenance, and supporting continuous improvements to crane reliability and performance.
How you will contribute
- Carry out planned preventative and corrective maintenance on a range of port cranes and associated mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, pneumatic, and control systems.
- Diagnose faults and complete effective repairs to minimise crane downtime and maintain operational performance.
- Respond to crane breakdowns and provide timely technical support to keep port operations running safely and efficiently.
- Inspect, test, and maintain crane equipment, recording defects, repairs, and inspection results accurately in maintenance systems.
- Work with electrical systems, including low and high voltage equipment, as well as PLCs, control systems, motors, drives, sensors, and associated crane technology where competent.
- Work with mechanical, hydraulic, and pneumatic systems associated with crane operations.
- Interpret technical drawings, electrical schematics, manuals, and other engineering documentation to support maintenance and fault finding.
- Carry out maintenance activities at height and in challenging operational environments, following all required safety and isolation procedures.
- Work closely with Operations and other Engineering teams to identify recurring faults and improve crane availability and reliability.
- Support engineering projects, modifications, and continuous improvement initiatives focused on crane performance and operational efficiency.
- Maintain high standards of Health & Safety, ensuring permit-to-work, safe isolation, PPE, and environmental procedures are followed at all times.
- Share technical knowledge with colleagues and support the development of apprentices and junior technicians through coaching and guidance.
What you will bring
- Recognised apprenticeship or qualification in Mechanical or Electrical Engineering, such as NVQ, City & Guilds, BTEC, or equivalent.
- Previous experience maintaining cranes, heavy plant, industrial equipment, or similar complex machinery.
- Strong fault-finding and problem-solving skills, particularly across electrical and/or mechanical systems.
- Experience working with hydraulic, pneumatic, control, PLC, drives, or high/low-voltage systems would be advantageous.
- Experience working in a safety-critical industrial, port, manufacturing, or similar environment.
- Ability to read and interpret electrical schematics, technical drawings, and engineering documentation.
- Strong attention to detail with a focus on equipment reliability, safety, and quality of work.
- Good communication and organisational skills, with the ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team.
- Flexible and adaptable approach, with the ability to respond to changing operational priorities and breakdown requirements.
- IT literate with experience using maintenance management systems.
- Willingness and ability to work at height and in outdoor operational environments.
- Act as an ambassador for DP World at all times, promoting high standards of safety, professionalism, teamwork, and continuous improvement.
