Environmental Compliance - Manager Environmental

Position SummaryThe Senior Environmental Operations Manager is responsible for owning the implementation, maintenance, and continual improvement of the company’s Environmental Management System (EMS) across coal mining, port, and corporate facilities located in 8 states. This role provides technical support to site-level team members across all environmental programs (including regulatory/permitting, air, water, and waste) while driving regulatory compliance, risk reduction, and operational resiliency. This position works cross functionally with operations, engineering, and other departments to integrate environmental practices across the organization and achieve exemplary environmental performance.Target ResponsibilitiesLead the implementation, maintenance, and continual improvement of the corporate Environmental Management System (EMS). Develop policies, standards, procedures, roles and responsibilities, and governance processes related to environmental management.Oversee environmental aspects and impacts assessment process, support development of environmental objectives. Oversee environmental compliance assurance processes, including internal and third-party environmental audits, management system assessments, risk evaluations, compliance reviews, and gap analyses.Manage environmental training and awareness programs for operating personnel and contractors, including role-based training for EMS responsibilities and operational controls.Provide technical support to site-level staff on complex and emerging environmental matters or litigation. Proactively develop strategies, programs, and processes to ensure compliance. Supervise incident and violation response, agency communications, and environmental due diligence as needed.Support modernization and integration of the company’s environmental data system to achieve regulatory alignment, field utility, and reporting efficiency.Support evaluation of proposed environmental regulations and policy developments, assess potential business impacts, and coordinate responses as needed.Provide technical support for environmental and sustainability disclosures and external reporting to ensure standardization, completeness, and accuracy across the organization.Continuously engage with environmental staff to promote consistent application of company standards and best practices across the organization.Oversee EMS execution at all levels of the organization, monitor and measure performance, and develop plans to drive continuous improvement. Required Skills and ExperienceBachelor’s degree in engineering, physical sciences, environmental management or a related technical field.Ten or more years of progressive environmental experience, including experience managing or supporting multi-site operations or corporate environmental programs.Demonstrated experience implementing, maintaining, auditing, or improving an Environmental Management System, informed by recognized standards such as ISO 14001.Strong working knowledge of federal and state environmental regulations and permitting requirements, encompassing all environmental program areas. Ability to effectively interface with internal and external stakeholders.Experience developing policies, procedures, standards, training materials, audit tools, and corrective action processes.Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to communicate technical and regulatory topics clearly to non-technical audiences.Experience working in mining, industrial, manufacturing, energy, infrastructure, or other regulated operations.The role is based in the corporate office and entails close collaboration with personnel across all operations. Regular travel to operating locations is required.
