Fiber Engineer - Well Services
Job Overview
The Fiber Engineer is an experienced fiber optic specialist supporting technically advanced well-surveillance projects involving conveyance optic cable to acquire DAS and DTS data in real time. The role covers the full operational cycle, including pre-job engineering, downhole fiber deployment, multi-vendor interrogator setup and operation, and data quality control. This is a field-intensive position requiring proven expertise in distributed fiber optic sensing (DFOS) and through-tubing intervention practices.

Responsibilities
- Plan and supervise deployment of fiber optic cable within capillary tubing for through-tubing conveyance in live production and injection wells.
- Manage reel preparation, fiber termination, and surface connection to interrogation units.
- Execute fiber optic splicing (fusion and mechanical), connector preparation, and optical loss management to maintain signal integrity across downhole fiber runs.
- Conduct pre-job and post-job OTDR testing and optical verification to confirm fiber continuity and performance.
- Troubleshoot deployment anomalies including fiber breaks, high attenuation events, and mechanical obstructions, performing root cause analysis and corrective actions.
- Set up, configure, and operate multi-vendor DAS and DTS interrogation systems.
- Configure acquisition parameters including pulse repetition frequency (PRF), gauge length, channel spacing, sampling frequency, and measurement range in line with well objectives and vendor operating envelopes.
- Monitor real-time data streams during acquisition, identify anomalies, and adjust acquisition parameters on-site to optimize signal-to-noise ratio and data quality.
- Archive acquired data in vendor-specific and non-proprietary formats with proper metadata tagging, depth/time referencing, and handover documentation.
- Liaise with interrogator vendors for technical support, software updates, and calibration prior to field mobilization.
- Provide technical input for RFQs, scope of work documents, and vendor qualification assessments related to fiber optic sensing and through-tubing DFOS contracts.
Skills
- Hands-on proficiency in fusion splicing, mechanical splicing, OTDR trace analysis, optical loss budgeting, and fiber characterization.
- Operational experience with two or more interrogator systems.
- Ability to generate and interpret DAS waterfall plots and DTS temperature profiles, and recognize flow, leak, and valve-operation signatures using vendor software.
- Familiarity with single-mode, multi-mode, and specialty-coated fibers and their mechanical and thermal performance under downhole conditions.
- Proficiency in managing large DFOS datasets, including structured archiving, time/depth alignment, and preparation of clean data handover packages for clients.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in petroleum, electrical, optical/photonics engineering, or a closely related technical discipline.
- Minimum of 6 years of experience in oilfield services, specifically in DFOS operations.
- IWCF or WELL SHARP Well Control certification preferred.
