Firmware Validation Engineer

Key Responsibilities

  • Design, implement, and maintain CI/CD pipelines for embedded firmware development using GitLab CI/CD or similar platforms.
  • Automate firmware build, test, packaging, artifact management, versioning, and release workflows.
  • Create reusable pipeline jobs, scripts, containers, and development environments across firmware projects.
  • Improve management and reproducibility of embedded compilers, SDKs, toolchains, dependencies, and build environments.
  • Establish and improve Git-based development practices, including branching, merge workflows, release processes, tagging, and configuration management.
  • Integrate engineering platforms and workflows such as requirements management, project tracking, documentation, source control, testing, and release systems.
  • Develop integrations and automation between tools using APIs, scripts, web services, or similar technologies.
  • Improve traceability between requirements, source code changes, builds, test results, defects, firmware versions, and releases.
  • Work with Firmware Test Engineers to integrate automated tests, regression testing, and HIL environments into CI/CD pipelines.
  • Develop dashboards, reports, and automated workflows that provide visibility into build status, test results, release readiness, and engineering activities.
  • Identify manual or inconsistent development processes and implement scalable automation and standardised DevOps practices.

Cybersecurity & Compliance Responsibilities

  • Work with the Cybersecurity organisation to implement security requirements and development processes defined for Firmware projects.
  • Coordinate and track cybersecurity activities, action items, remediation tasks, and required engineering evidence across the Firmware team.
  • Integrate applicable security checks and controls into firmware development and CI/CD workflows.
  • Support vulnerability management, security findings, dependency tracking, software composition analysis, and remediation activities.
  • Help maintain traceability and evidence required to demonstrate implementation of cybersecurity requirements.
  • Support firmware teams with cybersecurity compliance activities related to applicable product security standards and regulations.

Required Qualifications

  • 5+ years of experience in firmware, embedded software, DevOps, build/release engineering, or a related embedded systems role.
  • Strong understanding of embedded software development workflows and firmware build environments.
  • Hands-on experience designing and maintaining CI/CD pipelines.
  • Experience with Git and Git-based development workflows.
  • Strong scripting or programming skills using Python, Bash, PowerShell, or similar languages.
  • Experience with containers such as Docker and reproducible development/build environments.
  • Experience automating software build, test, integration, or release processes.
  • Experience integrating engineering tools or systems using REST APIs, scripts, or automation services.
  • Familiarity with software configuration management, versioning, artifacts, and release management.
  • Strong troubleshooting, communication, and cross-functional coordination skills.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with GitLab and GitLab CI/CD.
  • Experience developing or supporting C/C++ embedded firmware projects.
  • Familiarity with embedded compilers, cross-compilation, SDKs, RTOS environments, and hardware-dependent build/test workflows.
  • Experience with engineering platforms such as Jama Connect, Smartsheet, Microsoft SharePoint, or equivalent tools.
  • Experience integrating automated firmware testing or Hardware-in-the-Loop (HIL) systems into CI/CD environments.
  • Familiarity with Typhoon HIL or similar platforms.
  • Experience with embedded product cybersecurity practices such as vulnerability management, SBOM, static analysis, dependency scanning, or security automation.
  • Familiarity with cybersecurity regulations or frameworks such as the EU Cyber Resilience Act (CRA).
  • Familiarity with security assessment or vulnerability management platforms such as Mandiant or equivalent tools.
  • Experience with power electronics, UPS firmware, industrial control systems, energy systems, or other complex embedded products.

What Success Looks Like

  • Firmware builds and releases become reproducible, automated, and consistently managed.
  • CI/CD becomes a standard part of the firmware development workflow.
  • Engineering tools and development processes become increasingly integrated and automated.
  • Automated firmware testing and regression results are connected to development pipelines.
  • Firmware requirements, changes, builds, tests, and releases have improved end-to-end traceability.
  • Cybersecurity requirements and remediation activities are consistently tracked, implemented, and supported with appropriate evidence.
  • Manual engineering effort is reduced while development visibility and process consistency improve.
