Founding Product Designer

Discussion

Summary

Founding product designer at an early-stage insurtech startup, owning end-to-end UX for insurance claims software as AI agents take on more claims work. Day-to-day mixes user research and product analytics, workflow design, AI human-in-the-loop experiences, and building the company's design system, on-site in New York.

About the Role

Join an early-stage insurtech company as its first product designer, partnering with product and engineering to make complex insurance claims workflows easier for operators. You will shape the product experience as AI agents take on more claims work.

What You'll Do

  • Own end-to-end UX across claims workspaces, operational dashboards, and other customer-facing product surfaces.

  • Use product analytics, heat maps, user interviews, and direct observation to identify workflow problems and guide design decisions.

  • Work with product leadership and engineering to translate customer needs into clear workflows and implementation-ready designs.

  • Design AI and human-in-the-loop experiences that show users what an agent did, the sources it used, and where it is uncertain.

  • Lead improvements from discovery through delivery as the product evolves for larger insurance organizations.

  • Establish design principles and a design system, prototype with AI tools, and assess whether changes reduce user effort.

What We're Looking For

  • 5 to 8 years of product design experience in technology companies, with consistent tenures.

  • Early-stage startup experience as a founding designer or first hire in a design function.

  • Strong UX skills simplifying complex workflows, informed by behavioral data and user research.

  • Experience designing dense, technical software used by operators throughout the workday.

  • Hands-on prototyping experience with AI coding tools such as Claude or Lovable.

  • Product design experience beyond visual or UI design, including taking work through engineering handoff.

  • Insurance, claims, healthcare, other regulated domains, AI workflows, or design-system experience is a plus.

Compensation & Benefits

Base salary: $170,000 to $220,000 annually. Visa transfers are supported; new visa sponsorship is not available.

Location
