Frontend Software Engineering Intern - Undergraduate
Summary
12-week undergraduate frontend engineering internship on Sony Interactive Entertainment's Audience Platform team, building and improving features in a production React/TypeScript app for internal PlayStation audience-segmentation and marketing tools. On-site in Los Angeles or San Mateo, CA.
Role Summary:
Join the Audience Platform team at Sony Interactive Entertainment (SIE) and gain hands-on experience developing internal tools that support promotions, advertising, and marketing campaigns across PlayStation.
Our team builds applications that help internal business users create and manage audience segments. We turn complex audience data and workflows into accessible, user-friendly interfaces for segment creation, discovery, comparison, and insights.
As a Frontend Software Engineering Intern, you'll work alongside experienced engineers to develop and improve features in a production React application using JavaScript and TypeScript. You'll take ownership of a defined feature or improvement, from understanding user needs through implementation, testing, and code review. This internship offers practical experience with frontend development, API integration, and collaborative engineering while learning how internal tools support business decisions.
What You’ll Be Doing:
- Build and improve React components for audience workflows, including segment lists, forms, filters, details, and insights.
- Translate product requirements and API data into clear, accessible user interfaces, including loading, empty, error, and permission-aware states.
- Explore how application routes, components, data, and state work together to identify and implement focused improvements within a production codebase.
- Write and update tests or component examples, verify functionality in the browser, and explain what your testing covers.
- Collaborate with engineers, product partners, and reviewers to clarify requirements, discuss technical tradeoffs, and improve solutions through feedback.
- Gain practical experience with TypeScript contracts, shared UI components, JSON, API wrappers, and a backend-for-frontend to understand how frontend applications interact with backend services.
- Learn and apply development practices using Git, pull requests, code review, and testing tools such as Storybook, mock, unit, and browser testing workflows.
- Explore how internal audience tools support marketing and analytics decisions across PlayStation, including how Sony uses LLMs daily and the latest AI technology.
What We’re Looking For:
- Currently pursuing an undergraduate degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or a related field.
- Working knowledge of HTML, CSS, and JavaScript, with the ability to build and explain a small interactive web page or application.
- Basic familiarity with React components, props, and state through coursework or personal projects, with a willingness to learn TypeScript in a production codebase.
- Comfort reading JSON and making simple API requests, along with introductory experience using Git or another version control system.
- Curiosity about how data, permissions, and shared components affect user interfaces, with a willingness to ask questions when requirements are unclear.
- Clear communication, collaborative problem-solving skills, and openness to feedback and code review.
- Java experience and MVC design pattern familiarity are a plus.
- Interest in testing, accessibility, and clear user experiences is beneficial, with related coursework or project experience considered a plus.
