Description

Our Financial Accounting Advisory Services (FAAS) practice supports clients across Banking & Capital Markets, Wealth & Asset Management and Insurance. We help leading financial institutions address complex accounting, financial reporting, regulatory, data, risk and control challenges. We are seeking a Manager with strong general FAAS capabilities and particular experience in IFRS 9 expected credit loss (ECL), credit risk modelling, data analytics and the application of artificial intelligence to finance and risk.

FAAS sits within EY’s Assurance – Financial Services Organisation and is a fast-growing practice globally and in Hong Kong. The successful candidate will deliver a varied portfolio of accounting advisory and finance transformation engagements, work directly with client finance and risk functions, and provide specialist support to EY audit teams. ECL, modelling, data analytics and AI will form an important part of the role, alongside broader financial reporting, accounting change, controls and regulatory work.

Within EY’s Assurance service line, the team provides a broad range of services, including:

  • Technical accounting and financial reporting advisory, including accounting policy development, implementation of new standards, GAAP and IFRS conversions, and support on complex transactions and judgements.
  • Specialist accounting and risk support to audit teams, including assessment of complex estimates and judgements, evaluation of models and data, review of financial statement disclosures, and clear documentation of findings.
  • Finance transformation, operating model, process, governance and controls improvement, including data, reporting and technology-enabled change.
  • Regulatory, remediation, transaction and on-call accounting advisory support for financial institutions
  • IFRS 9 ECL advisory, including methodology, staging and significant increase in credit risk, forward-looking information, management overlays, governance and financial statement disclosures.
  • Credit risk and impairment model development, enhancement, implementation and review across probability of default, loss given default, exposure at default and macroeconomic scenario frameworks.
  • Data analytics, visualisation and AI-enabled solutions to support accounting analysis, portfolio diagnostics, model monitoring, controls testing, management insight and audit evidence.
  • Regulatory, audit and remediation support relating to credit risk measurement, governance and financial reporting
  • On-call accounting, modelling and credit risk advisory support to financial institutions.

Responsibilities and requirements

Responsibilities

  • Lead the day-to-day delivery of a portfolio of FAAS engagements, managing scope, workplans, budgets, risks, deliverables, technical quality and stakeholder communications.
  • Advise clients on complex accounting and financial reporting matters, including the interpretation and implementation of new standards, accounting policy development, technical papers, disclosures and remediation of reporting issues.
  • Support finance transformation and finance operating model engagements, including governance, process and controls enhancement, data strategy, reporting improvement and technology-enabled change.
  • Work effectively with EY audit teams as a specialist, agreeing scope and timelines; evaluating accounting judgements, models, assumptions, data and controls; documenting conclusions clearly; and communicating findings in a manner that supports audit quality and independence requirements.
  • Lead selected IFRS 9 ECL and credit risk workstreams, advising on methodology and key judgements and directing model development or review across PD, LGD and EAD.
  • Lead data analytics workstreams using large and complex finance and risk datasets, and identify practical AI and machine-learning use cases while addressing explainability, validation, data privacy, governance, controls and model risk.
  • Review the work of team members and specialists, coach junior colleagues, coordinate across accounting, risk, quantitative, audit and technology teams, build trusted client relationships, and contribute to proposals, thought leadership and practice development.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s or master’s degree in accounting, finance, economics, mathematics, statistics, data science, computer science or another relevant discipline, with a strong grounding in accounting and financial reporting.
  • A relevant professional qualification, such as CPA, CFA or FRM, is preferred; quantitative, data or model risk credentials are also advantageous.
  • Typically at least five years of relevant experience in financial services, professional services, audit, accounting advisory, finance transformation, credit risk, impairment modelling, model validation or related financial risk advisory, including experience leading workstreams and supervising teams.
  • Broad knowledge of IFRS and financial reporting issues affecting financial institutions, with the ability to research technical matters, exercise professional judgement and prepare clear, well-supported analyses and deliverables.
  • Experience in IFRS 9 ECL, credit risk or impairment models, with the ability to assess methodologies, assumptions, data, implementation and model performance. Experience with Python, R, SQL, SAS or comparable analytics tools, and visualisation tools such as Power BI or Tableau, is advantageous.
  • Experience working with or supporting external audit teams is desirable, including an understanding of audit evidence, documentation, professional scepticism, independence and the clear communication of specialist conclusions.
  • Strong project management, analytical, communication and problem-solving skills, with the confidence to manage competing priorities, challenge constructively, explain complex matters to non-specialists and lead senior client and internal stakeholders. Familiarity with AI and machine-learning applications in finance or risk is advantageous. Professional fluency in English is required; Cantonese and/or Mandarin is advantageous.
