Full-Stack Backend Engineer

Summary

Backend engineer at Numi, a Dubai fintech startup building an AI agent that manages users' money end to end. You'd own the Python/FastAPI backend: bank integrations (Plaid, Lean Technologies), migrating SQLite to Postgres, SSE streaming for agent responses, and the payment execution layer. In-office in Dubai 5 days a week.

At Numi, we're building AI that runs your money for you. Think of it as a money-obsessed friend who actually does the work: it pays your bills, invests on your behalf, manages your savings and chips away at your debt. On autopilot.

This isn't another budgeting app or a dashboard that tells you what you spent last month. Those show you the problem. Numi fixes it. We're building the decision layer that sits above your money and acts on it.

Because most people don't have a financial knowledge problem. They have an execution problem. Rent is due before payday, savings sit idle earning nothing, a subscription renews that you meant to cancel months ago, and money that should be working is just waiting. People know what they should do with their money. They don't have the time, and every day they don't, it costs them.

So we measure success differently. The less you think about Numi, the harder it's working. We're not chasing daily active users. We're chasing the moment rent clears before it's due and you never noticed it was close.

Money that thinks.

This is not a nine to five, and we're not going to pretend otherwise.

We think the financial industry needs rebuilding from the foundations up, and we think whoever does it will be a small group of people who decided it was worth years of their life. Our goal is a billion people financially independent. Not better informed about money. Independent from it. That's a decade of work and we are at the very start of it.

So we work the way that is required. Long days, six days when it matters, shipping something every single day. It will be intense. It will be hard work. It will also be the most rewarding and fun job. We say this upfront because hiring the wrong person is expensive for both of us, and we'd rather lose you at the job ad than at month four.

If you've been waiting for something worth going all in on, this is it.

Where you'll work

We're an in-person team. If you're in Dubai, you're in the office 5 days a week. For the right person, we'll make an exception: set up wherever, and we'll fly you in a few times a year and cover the costs.

About the role

You'll own the systems that move real money for real people. Numi's backend is the connective tissue between bank APIs, our agent layer, and a user who has handed us a mandate and expects it honoured. When a payment is late, someone's rent is late. There is no margin for "mostly works".

This is a build role at a stage where architecture decisions compound. What you choose in the next six months is the platform we run on for the next few years.

What you'll be doing

  • Designing and shipping APIs, data models and services in our Python/FastAPI backend
  • Building and hardening our bank integrations: Lean Technologies, Plaid, and the open banking rails coming with our TPP licence
  • Taking us from SQLite to a production Postgres estate, including schema design and migrations run without downtime
  • Building the execution layer that turns an agent's decision into a settled transaction, with the audit trail a regulator will ask for
  • Owning our streaming infrastructure. We use SSE for real-time agent responses and it needs to be bulletproof
  • Treating security and PII handling as a design constraint rather than a checklist at the end
  • Working out what breaks at 100x our current load, and building for it before we get there

What you'll need

  • 3+ years of hands-on experience, with real ownership of production systems handling real user data or transactions
  • Strong, hands-on Python, in FastAPI or an equivalent async framework
  • Deep SQL and relational data modelling. You have opinions about schemas and can defend them
  • Real experience with REST APIs, WebSockets or SSE, and auth (JWT, OAuth 2.0)
  • Comfort with AWS, including Lambda, Bedrock and the operational reality of running services in production
  • A track record of integrating third party APIs that were badly documented and occasionally wrong
  • The judgment to know when to build the robust version and when to ship the quick one
  • Experience building systems in a regulated environment (fintech, banking, payments, or similar)

Nice to have

  • Financial or payments API experience: Stripe, card rails, open banking, local clearing
  • Event-driven architecture (Kafka, RabbitMQ) and a view on when it's worth the complexity
  • Vector databases and the plumbing behind AI memory and RAG
  • Domain knowledge in personal finance, banking or investments
  • GraphQL

What you get for all your hard work

  • Salary that's competitive and equity that's meaningful
  • Founding-team ownership. You'll be one of the first people here
  • Founders in the room every day. No layers, no strategy you find out about after it's decided
  • A live regulatory sandbox and a real licensing path, CBUAE now and SAMA next
  • Visa sponsorship and relocation to Dubai, handled properly and paid for
  • Set up wherever you think best. We're distributed by design
  • 25 days annual leave plus public holidays, flexibility to work remotely
  • Health insurance
  • A team that ships daily. Weekly at worst. Never quarterly
