Head of Human Resources
Description
Head of Human Resources:
Paper Transport, a Wisconsin-based truckload, intermodal and logistics carrier, is seeking a hands-on Head of Human Resources for its headquarters in De Pere, WI. The position reports to the CEO and works directly with the Executive Leadership Team, and owns the people strategy for the entire company, from how we recruit, hire, onboard and train to how we develop and keep great people.
About Paper Transport
Founded in Green Bay in 1990, Paper Transport runs regional and dedicated truckload, intermodal, and logistics and brokerage services from its De Pere headquarters and terminals across the Midwest and Southeast. Since 2021 we've partnered with Equity Group Investments (EGI), the Chicago-based investment firm founded by Sam Zell, to accelerate our growth.
Our mission is to build a great place to work where outstanding people deliver.
What We're Looking For
We want a builder who moves with pace, works close to the business, makes decisions with data, and uses AI and modern tools to raise the bar on what HR delivers. You will spend real time in our terminals and operating reviews, not just at headquarters. If you have been the strongest HR partner in your organization and are ready to own the function, we want to talk.
Position Summary
The Head of Human Resources leads all human resources functions for Paper Transport, including talent acquisition, performance and talent management, compensation and benefits, learning and development, employee relations, and compliance. The position partners directly with the CFO, CEO and Executive Leadership Team to align the people strategy with the company's growth objectives, and leads and develops a high-caliber HR team. Success is measured in business outcomes (faster hiring, lower turnover, faster time-to-productivity and stronger leaders), not HR activity.
Responsibilities
- Builds and executes a people plan tied directly to the company’s value creation plan, with clear targets for hiring velocity, retention and talent quality; reports progress monthly to the CFO and CEO.
- Acts as a hands-on business partner to each member of the Executive Leadership Team on organization design, workforce planning, talent risk and succession; spends regular time in terminals and operating reviews to understand the business firsthand.
- Leads, coaches and develops a high-performing HR team, builds new capabilities as the company grows, and sets clear service standards for the functions it supports.
- Designs and runs a fast, disciplined talent acquisition process for office and leadership roles: structured interviews and work samples, behavioral assessment, hiring-manager accountability and quick offer turnaround.
- Develops and strengthens the company's employer brand in Northeast Wisconsin and terminal communities.
- Shares accountability with Driver Recruiting, Operations and Safety for driver retention: first-90-day onboarding experience, early-tenure turnover, and the hiring and development of Driver Managers.
- Owns onboarding and training company-wide: role-specific onboarding plans with time-to-productivity targets, and practical, measurable training for frontline leaders and Driver Managers.
- Runs a simple, high-accountability performance and talent process (clear goals, frequent check-ins and calibrated talent reviews) that leaders actually use.
- Leads talent-upgrade, succession planning and leadership development initiatives, with defined metrics and bench planning.
- Establishes compensation philosophy and pay structures, and manages the annual merit, incentive and long-term incentive processes in partnership with Finance.
- Directs benefits strategy and manages the benefits broker relationship, including annual renewals, plan design and benefits cost management.
- Builds and owns a people scorecard (time-to-fill, quality of hire, 90-day and annual and non-drivers, cost of turnover, engagement and HR cost per employee) and uses it to drive decisions, not just report.
- Actively identifies and deploys AI and automation across recruiting, onboarding, training and HR service delivery to make HR faster, smarter.
- Ensures compliance with federal, state and local employment laws across all operating states.
- Manages employee relations matters, including investigations and workforce changes.
- Travels to terminal locations across the Midwest and Southeast regularly (approximately 10-15% travel).
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in human resources, business administration or a related field, or equivalent experience.
- 8+ years of progressive HR experience, including leading an HR team or business-unit HR function in a multi-site organization. Strong HR Directors and senior HR Business Partners ready for their first head-of-function role are encouraged to apply.
- Experience in a multi-site organization with a large frontline or hourly workforce, such as transportation, logistics, distribution or manufacturing.
- Demonstrated success building HR processes that measurably improved hiring, retention or performance, with the numbers to show it.
- Track record of hiring and developing high-performing HR talent.
- Strong knowledge of compensation design, benefits strategy and benefits broker management.
- Proficiency with HR metrics and analytics, and the ability to connect people data to business results.
- Working knowledge of multi-state employment law and sound judgment in employee relations matters.
- Direct, practical and credible: able to challenge senior leaders with data and earn trust with frontline employees and drivers.
- Hands-on fluency with AI tools and modern HR technology, with specific examples of using them to improve speed, quality or cost.
- Bias for action: comfortable making decisions quickly with imperfect information in a fast-moving environment.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience in a private equity-backed organization.
- Experience in trucking or with an asset-based carrier, including familiarity with DOT/FMCSA requirements.
- Experience with UKG or a comparable HRIS and a learning management system.
- Experience with Culture Index or a similar behavioral assessment.
- SHRM-SCP or SPHR certification.
