About the Role

The HNW Motor Underwriting Specialist is a key role within the team, helping to drive profitable growth, strengthen producer and client relationships, and support service excellence across the portfolio.

This role is responsible for evaluating, selecting, and managing insurance risks within the HNW Motor portfolio, ensuring decisions are aligned with company guidelines and profitability targets. Reporting to the IPL Underwriting Manager, you will lead the portfolio’s operations and growth, while also providing specialist technical leadership to the A&NZ business.

In this role, you will:

Achievement of the premium budget

  • Achieve financial targets
  • Identify strategic opportunities to drive portfolio growth
  • Encourage and support team members to identify cross-marketing opportunities when presented

Underwriting Quality and Expertise

  • Evaluate, accept or decline new business, renewal business and endorsement requests based on the underwriting guidelines to ensure profitability and growth of the motor portfolio
  • Achieve or exceed quality audit expectations, and ensure thorough and accurate file documentation is upheld
  • Act as a technical specialist on the HNW Motor portfolio to internal staff
  • Manage and document referrals to higher authorities, ensuring timely and accurate communication
  • Work within scope of underwriting authority
  • Provide portfolio oversight and management, including review and interpretation of actuarial and portfolio analysis findings, and apply business knowledge to help inform underwriting decisions, portfolio actions and strategic recommendations
  • Contribute to the development of underwriting guidelines, policy wording updates, process improvement initiatives and best practices

Broker Relations and Service Delivery

  • Establish and maintain professional, strong long-term working relationships with producers
  • Foster and promote an environment of excellence in service delivery through your communication and professionalism with internal and external stakeholders
  • Continually educate producers on our underwriting appetite
  • Provide a high standard of service by meeting SLAs
  • Coordinate risk consulting services where required

What you’ll bring to the role

  • Solid underwriting experience in Motor Insurance with high-performance vehicles
  • Strong written and oral communication skills
  • Strong negotiation and marketing skills
  • Developing leadership skills with ability to coach and train others
  • Strong organisational and analytical skills
  • Strong understanding of underwriting policy practice and policy documentation requirements, including terms and conditions as defined by industry regulations
  • Demonstrated ability to collaborate with distribution, claims and actuarial teams to optimise product offerings and pricing strategies
  • Demonstrated ability to balance risk selection with commercial objectives to achieve profitable growth
  • Excellent analytical, risk assessment and decision-making abilities
