Installation Technician

The Installation Technician series of job classifications describes technical work involving electrical installation of various research equipment, apparatus and components, and fabricating and assembling related equipment used in large-scale experiments. There are three levels in the series: Installation Technician, Principal Installation Technician, and Principal Installation Technician Lead. Thethree levels are distinguished by the degree of familiarity with laboratory practices, task complexity, and the extent of supervision required.

Under the direction of a lead, supervisor or scientific and engineering staff, employees in this classification work on routine electrical installations.

Assignments and instructions are provided in a verbal and/or written form and include wiring lists, installation request forms, and simple block diagrams or schematics.

Work is to be performed in conformance with these instructions and laboratory safety practices.

Assignments may be reviewed in progress or at the completion of each instruction depending on the complexity of the particular task.

Core Duties:

• Fabricate multi-conductor cable assemblies, coaxial cables, and wiring harnesses.
• Route, place and tie down cables on cable trays and feed-through.
• Install, terminate, and connect cables including multi-conductor, coaxial, fiber optics, DC power cables to distribution frames, chassis, and experimental apparatus or equipment.
• Check installed cables for electrical continuity and excessive damage.
• Verify, update, and record cable numbers, routing, origination, and termination points, and connecting device designations.
• Fabricate, modify, and install standard electrical chassis, such as fuse panels, indicator panels, and switching relays.
• Fabricate rack assemblies.
• Install wiring and electronic sub-assemblies and equipment.
• Field install electronic racks and equipment, cable trays and conduits
• Collect and collate parts, materials, tools, and equipment for installation and assembly.
• Perform work in accordance with the National Electric Code (NEC).
• Adhere to applicable environmental safety and health procedures and guidelines such as such as National Electric Code (NEC) and Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA).
• Adhere to safety rules.
  

Minimum Education:

High School Diploma or equivalent

Minimum Experience:

Some experience in electrical control systems or a combination of relevant education and experience.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

• Ability to use simple electrical test equipment, such as volt/ohm meters, oscilloscopes, high-pot or leakage testers.
• Working experience with common hand tools such as soldering iron, connector crimping tools.
• Must be able to operate Power Industrial Vehicles (PIVs) such as lifts, forklift or other and be able to maintain necessary training and/or certification
• Ability to read instructions from installation request forms, wiring diagrams and simple schematics.
• Knowledge of basic AC and DC circuit theory, including the understanding and use of Ohm's law and the meaning of various electrical quantities.
• Knowledge of basic electronic components and their nomenclature.
• Must be able to interface with all levels of scientific and/or engineering staff and have good customer service skills.
• Demonstrated communication skills (both verbal and written)
• Computer literacy- Basic computer skills and demonstrated experience with office software and email applications
• Ability to understand and follow environmental safety and health rules, procedures and regulations such as National Electric Code (NEC) and Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA).
  

Certificates and Licenses Required

Must possess and maintain a Valid California Non-commercial Class C Driver's license.
