Discussion

Summary

An intermediate BI analyst joins a 10-person data & analytics team at a major NZ express freight/logistics company, writing SQL against live operational data and building Power BI reports on revenue, margin and performance, while helping migrate legacy warehousing/SSRS to Microsoft Fabric and laying semantic foundations for AI querying.

Why You’d Like It

If you are an analyst who values day-to-day autonomy, works well with live operational data, and wants hands-on exposure to emerging tech, this role offers a compelling next step. Situated alongside operational leaders and senior decision-makers in an open, down-to-earth setting, this position cuts through rigid red tape and formal sprint frameworks. You will have the space to manage your own workload while upskilling into Microsoft Fabric and exploring practical, business-focused AI tools.

The Story

In an industry where timing, movement, and accuracy are vital, real-time data is critical to guiding pricing, service delivery, and network performance. As the business prepares for future demands, the data function is modernising its architecture—moving away from legacy warehousing toward Microsoft Fabric and building the semantic foundation for AI-driven querying. To support this roadmap, the team is bringing on an intermediate Business Intelligence Analyst to transform complex freight and commercial data into reliable, actionable reporting.

Company Profile

This business is an established leader in New Zealand’s express and commercial logistics network, keeping goods and commercial trade moving seamlessly across the country. Part of a broader trans-Tasman group, they offer the security and scale of a large enterprise while keeping a remarkably approachable, flat team culture where senior executives and specialist teams collaborate on the same floor.

Your Role

Working within a 10-person data and analytics team and reporting to the National Data & Analytics Manager, the role focuses on delivering practical data products and bridging technical detail with everyday commercial decisions:

  • Writing and optimising SQL queries to select, aggregate, and insert live operational data.
  • Designing clean, intuitive Power BI reports to help stakeholders track revenue, margin, and operational performance.
  • Supporting the planned migration from legacy systems and SSRS to Microsoft Fabric data pipelines and reusable data models.
  • Assisting with the development of semantic layers and stored procedures to support future AI interfaces and statistical querying.
  • Partnering with business stakeholders across the organisation to understand requirements, validate insights, and drive report adoption.

Benefits

  • Free on-site parking at the Penrose office.
  • Participation in an employee share purchase programme.
  • On-site coffee cart and regular Friday team drinks.
  • Direct pathways into senior analytical positions, management, or broader group opportunities across New Zealand and Australia.
  • Dedicated support to learn and apply Microsoft Fabric and practical AI tools on the job.

Your Fit

  • Strong working knowledge of SQL, with confidence querying, joining, and aggregating datasets.
  • Practical familiarity with Power BI for reporting and visualisation (with an appetite to deepen your skillset).
  • An understanding of operational metrics or interest in fast-moving sectors like logistics, transport, or supply chain.
  • Enthusiasm to learn cloud analytics platforms such as Microsoft Fabric and work on applied AI initiatives.
  • Clear communication skills with the ability to explain technical outputs to non-technical operational leaders.
  • A reliable, self-managing mindset suited to high autonomy and minimal micro-management.

Applicants must be legally entitled to work in New Zealand. If you are not a NZ Citizen, you must have the right of permanent residence or a valid work visa.
