Intermediate / senior software developer
Summary
Intermediate/senior full-stack engineer at Evnex, a Christchurch startup building smart EV chargers and the software behind a 25,000+ charger fleet across NZ and Australia. Day-to-day: designing features across cloud backend, APIs, web and mobile (TypeScript, Node.js, React/React Native, AWS/GCP/Azure) and building agentic AI workflows into engineering practice.
Salary: $95,000 – $125,000 per year
About the role
At Evnex, we design, build and install smart electric vehicle charging systems. Our New Zealand-built chargers and software make sure vehicles are charged efficiently, affordably and with the lowest possible impact on both the electricity grid and the environment. We're a fast-growing Christchurch start-up with 25,000+ connected chargers across New Zealand and Australia. We're building energy infrastructure where chargers talk to cars, solar systems, power companies and each other. The software behind that is genuinely interesting, with real-time systems and complex integrations. Our customers love what we've built, and there's an exciting product roadmap ahead. We're looking for an intermediate or senior engineer who wants ownership and impact. You'll join a small, high-trust engineering team, own significant parts of the product, work directly with design and product leadership, and have a say in technical direction.
Key responsibilities
Design and implement core features across the stack: cloud backend, APIs, web and mobile apps.
Build and scale the systems behind our connected charger fleet.
Work closely with design and product to ship high-impact features, and help shape both the product and technical roadmap.
Build greenfield features, with new platforms and products in the pipeline.
Move between quick prototypes and full delivery, depending on what the problem needs.
Help shape how AI fits into our engineering practice. Not just autocomplete: we're building agentic workflows into how we develop, test and ship.
Integrate with power companies, energy assets, solar systems and vehicles to build the future of energy for New Zealand and Australia.
About you
Have at least 3 years of real-world software engineering experience and have shipped products end to end, from design through to delivery.
Have experience with TypeScript, Node.js and React, or are confident picking them up.
Have React Native or similar mobile framework experience, or are comfortable learning it.
Have worked with cloud platforms and containerised services (AWS, GCP, Azure or similar) and are comfortable with relational or non-relational databases.
Use AI tools (Claude, Cursor, Copilot, Codex or similar) actively, or have a strong interest in doing so.
Enjoy systems design, and know what needs to be well engineered and what just needs to ship.
Must have a permanent right to work in New Zealand.
