Intermediate Senior Staff Backend Engineer C Tenant Scale Git
You will improve Git and Gitaly to make repository access more capable, reliable, and efficient. You will participate in architectural discussions, contribute features and fixes to upstream Git, and integrate Git capabilities into Gitaly. You will scope work, estimate effort, plan implementations, and test and validate changes for stable production use. You will connect open-source Git discussions with product needs, collaborate with contributors, and represent GitLab constructively in the Git ecosystem.
Responsibilities
- Participate in architectural discussions and technical decisions for Git and Gitaly.
- Contribute features, bug fixes, and performance improvements to upstream Git.
- Adapt Gitaly to use new and existing Git capabilities.
- Connect upstream Git discussions with product direction and engineering work.
- Scope tasks, estimate effort, and describe implementation plans.
- Test and validate features and integrations for correctness and reliability.
- Collaborate with team members, contributors, and the Git ecosystem.
- Represent GitLab constructively in the open-source ecosystem.
Requirements
- Experience building instrumented, observable software systems.
- Knowledge of Git internals or practical experience operating Git servers.
- Experience writing and testing production-quality C code.
- Experience contributing to open-source projects and collaborating in public spaces.
- Familiarity with Go for backend development.
- Understanding of Linux internals, including processes, memory management, input/output, and filesystems.
- Interest or experience in large-scale or distributed systems, storage formats, graph theory, or highly available production environments.
