Intermediate Software Engineer
Summary
Intermediate Software Engineer at Comrad, a healthcare/radiology software company, based in its Christchurch CBD office. You design, develop, test and maintain the Comrad platform (Java, TypeScript, React, APIs, relational databases) and champion AI-assisted development across the full software lifecycle using tools like Claude Code.
About the role
As an Intermediate Software Engineer at Comrad, you will work alongside experienced Software and QA Engineers to design, develop, test, and maintain modern software solutions across the Comrad platform.
You will take ownership of development tasks and features, contribute to technical decisions, and help deliver reliable, maintainable software that supports healthcare professionals and improves patient outcomes.
AI-assisted software development is a central part of this role. We are looking for an engineer who is already a capable and enthusiastic practitioner of AI-assisted development on real work, and who wants to help champion its adoption across the team.
You will be expected to go beyond simply using AI coding assistants, applying AI throughout the software development lifecycle (AIDLC), from requirements and design through to implementation, testing and review, to improve engineering productivity, quality and delivery.
Your key responsibilities will include
Designing, developing, testing and maintaining software applications and services.
Taking ownership of development tasks and features, from requirements through to implementation and delivery.
Collaborating with engineers, product teams and stakeholders to design and deliver high-quality solutions.
Investigating and resolving technical issues, contributing to software reliability and continuous improvement.
Writing clean, maintainable, secure and well-tested code.
Participating actively in code reviews, Agile ceremonies and technical discussions.
Applying AI tools effectively across coding, debugging, testing, refactoring, documentation and problem-solving, and throughout the wider development lifecycle.
Sharing AI-assisted development knowledge and practices with colleagues, demonstrating effective workflows and helping others build confidence.
Identifying, experimenting with and evaluating opportunities to improve engineering practices through AI, automation and emerging technologies.
About you
A tertiary qualification in Computer Science, Software Engineering or a related field, or equivalent practical experience.
Typically two or more years of commercial software development experience, or demonstrated equivalent capability.
A sound understanding of software engineering principles, with experience developing and maintaining production software.
Experience with technologies such as Java, TypeScript, React, APIs and relational databases.
Familiarity with Git, automated testing and modern software development practices.
The ability to work independently on reasonably scoped tasks, exercise sound technical judgement and collaborate effectively with others.
Strong communication, analytical thinking and problem-solving skills.
Demonstrated hands-on experience with AI-assisted software development tools, such as Claude Code, GitHub Copilot, ChatGPT or equivalent, applied to real software development work.
A practical understanding of how to integrate AI into development workflows, and the ability to critically evaluate, test, refine and validate AI-generated solutions.
The enthusiasm to champion AI-assisted engineering within a team, share knowledge and help colleagues adopt new approaches.
A genuine interest in emerging technologies, with a willingness to experiment, learn and challenge established development practices where better approaches are available.
We are particularly interested in candidates who can demonstrate how they have used AI to meaningfully improve their development workflow, rather than simply having experimented with AI tools. Please include a brief example of this with your application.
What we offer
A supportive work environment where you will work alongside highly skilled colleagues who are passionate about what they do.
A bonus scheme, birthday leave and a healthy activity benefit.
Exposure to healthcare and radiology workflows and specialist applications.
The opportunity to help shape how AI-assisted software development is adopted and used within our engineering teams, with access to modern AI development tools such as Claude Code
A modern Christchurch CBD office with great city views and easy access to cafés, transport and amenities.
Location and working arrangements
This role is based in our Christchurch CBD office. The position is predominantly office-based, with regular in-person collaboration an important part of how our engineering teams operate. Some flexibility to work from home is available by agreement, but this is not a remote role.
