Summary
A 2nd Line IT/Infrastructure Engineer supporting an on-premises, hybrid estate: maintaining physical and virtual servers (transitioning from VMware to Proxmox), Windows Server, Active Directory, Microsoft 365/Azure, networking, and backup/disaster recovery. Onsite role in Cambridge, UK, paying £35,000–£38,000 per year.

Requirements:- Experience in 2nd Line IT support
- Experience with Windows Server
- Experience with Active Directory
- Experience with on-premises infrastructure and physical servers
- Experience with VMware / vSphere
- Networking fundamentals, including TCP/IP, DNS, DHCP and switches
- Hardware troubleshooting and maintenance experience
- Experience with backup and recovery technologies
- Experience with Microsoft 365 / Azure
- Experience with virtualisation technologies
- Proxmox experience would be an advantage
- Experience migrating or managing virtual machines within Proxmox would be an advantage
- Provide 2nd Line technical support across hardware, software and infrastructure
- Maintain and support on-premises servers and infrastructure
- Monitor and maintain physical and virtual server environments
- Support VMware environments and assist with the transition to Proxmox
- Troubleshoot server, network and infrastructure issues
- Support Windows Server environments, Active Directory and core Microsoft technologies
- Manage hardware, server builds, upgrades and maintenance
- Work with networking technologies including switches, firewalls, DHCP and DNS
- Support backup, recovery and disaster recovery processes
- Work alongside the wider IT team on infrastructure projects and improvements
- Escalate complex issues where appropriate while taking ownership through to resolution

We are working with an established organisation that is looking to add a 2nd Line IT Engineer to its technical team. This is a great opportunity for someone who has progressed beyond traditional desktop support and wants to develop their career further into infrastructure, servers and virtualisation. The role will be heavily focused on maintaining and supporting our on-premises infrastructure, with a predominantly physical server environment and a hybrid IT estate. We have historically relied on VMware and are currently transitioning from VMware to Proxmox, so Proxmox experience would be highly advantageous, although strong VMware and general infrastructure experience will be considered.
