The Opportunity
- As a Java Backend Software Developer, you will play a key role in the design, development, and enhancement of our advanced transport management platforms, including:
- Automated Vehicle Location (AVL) systems
- Intermodal Transport Control Systems (ITCS)
- Electromobility and smart transportation solutions
- You'll be involved across the full software development lifecycle, from analysis and design through to implementation, testing, deployment, and ongoing maintenance.
- Working closely with development and project teams in our headquarters in Germany, you'll contribute to international projects that are helping public transport providers operate more efficiently and deliver a better passenger experience.
Key Responsibilities
- Design, develop, and maintain high-quality Java backend applications
- Implement new functionality and enhance existing software solutions
- Analyse business and technical requirements and translate them into robust software designs
- Develop scalable microservices and REST APIs
- Ensure all code meets quality standards through unit testing, peer review, and continuous improvement practices
- Take ownership of specific software modules and ensure seamless integration within larger systems
- Support troubleshooting, bug fixing, and performance optimisation activities
- Collaborate with Agile development teams and contribute to sprint planning, estimation, and delivery activities
- Work closely with colleagues in Germany and other international teams to deliver innovative software solutions

Essential Requirements
- Ideally Degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related discipline
- Relevant commercial experience developing enterprise applications using Java/J2EE
- Strong hands-on experience with Core Java development
- Experience building Microservices and RESTful APIs using Spring Boot
- Excellent working knowledge of Hibernate and Spring Data
- Strong understanding of object-oriented design principles and software engineering best practices
- Experience working with relational databases such as PostgreSQL, Oracle, MySQL, or DB2
- Familiarity with Agile development methodologies
- Knowledge of CI/CD concepts and deployment processes
- Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities
- Excellent communication skills and a collaborative mindset
- Fluent spoken and written English
Desirable Skills
- Experience working with containerised applications using Docker and Kubernetes
- Exposure to monitoring and observability tools such as Grafana and Loki
- Experience with MongoDB or other NoSQL databases
- Previous experience working on real-time, mission-critical, or transport-related systems
