Junior Backend Software Engineer
Summary
Junior backend engineer at Accountable, a digital finance platform offering privacy-preserving data verification and DeFi/lending yield products. Day to day: building and shipping Java backend services, integrating on-chain/off-chain protocols, monitoring TVL and client activity, and maintaining CI/CD. Fully remote (European timezone) via B2B contract.
Accountable is a digital finance platform that lets businesses verify and share data in a privacy-preserving way, and gives retail investors access to verifiable yield opportunities. We aim to remove trust barriers, reduce fraud, and unlock new opportunities for efficient and safe financial growth.
We're looking for a junior backend engineer to join our team and work on the systems behind our DeFi and lending products. You'll be building real features from day one, working close to the protocols and data that power the business, and learning fast alongside engineers who'll invest in your growth.
What You'll Do:
- Develop, test, and review code across our backend services, with real ownership over the features you ship.
- Handle application deployments, learning our release process and taking on increasing responsibility for shipping safely.
- Rapidly build and iterate on new features and MVPs, using modern tools and techniques to move from idea to working product quickly.
- Integrate with external protocols and data sources, connecting our systems to the broader on-chain and off-chain ecosystem.
- Monitor clients and protocol activity — tracking TVL changes, secondary markets, and flagging suspicious behavior before it becomes a problem.
- Respond to client issues and provide day-to-day technical support, developing a strong sense for how our systems behave in production.
- Build and improve monitoring tooling, including on-chain tracing and internal dashboards, so issues surface before they escalate.
- Support client onboarding and integration, helping new clients get set up smoothly.
- Contribute to our UI V2 migration and handle smaller ad-hoc development requests as they come up.
- Maintain and help set up CI/CD pipelines on GitHub, so the whole team can ship reliably and often.
Requirements:
- Operational knowledge of Java (17+) — you're comfortable writing, reading, and debugging Java code and understanding core language features from Java 17 onward (records, pattern matching, sealed classes, etc.), even if you're still building depth.
- Some Python (3.10+) — useful for scripting, tooling, and data work alongside our Java services.
- Good knowledge of SQL — you can write queries confidently, understand joins, indexing basics, and how to reason about schema design.
- Familiarity with PostgreSQL is advantageous — prior hands-on exposure to Postgres specifically (types, extensions, performance quirks) will help you ramp up faster.
- Understanding of HTTP and REST — you know how APIs are structured, how status codes and methods work, and can design or consume a REST endpoint without hand-holding.
- Who are we looking for
- AI-savvy — you use AI tools (coding assistants, LLMs, etc.) effectively in your day-to-day workflow to move faster and learn faster, and you stay curious about how these tools keep evolving.
- A self-learner who's keen to own impact — you pick things up independently, aren't afraid to dig into unfamiliar code or protocols, and want real ownership over what you build rather than just tickets to close.
- Resourceful, self-motivated, and intellectually curious, with strong general problem-solving skills.
- Up to date with the space — genuinely interested in emerging technologies and industry trends, not just clocking in.
- Passionate about building and improving products, and comfortable experimenting with new approaches.
- Professional integrity and dependability.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English.
- Basic Linux administration and troubleshooting skills.
Nice to Have:
- Hackathon participation or personal/pet projects.
- Experience with dApp development libraries and frameworks — a big plus.
- Previous experience with lending protocols — a big plus.
- Understanding of blockchain fundamentals, cryptography, and related concepts.
- Setup
- Fully remote in European timezone.
- B2B collaboration.
