Location: Onsite - Champaign, IL Current enrollment at University of Illinois Urbana Champaign requiredOpportunityThe Data Engineer will collaborate with various teams including Operations, Data Analysis, Smart Factory, and Digital Transformation to develop and implement data and software engineering solutions for optimizing manufacturing processes and driving digital transformation initiatives. This individual will also serve as a technical lead within the University of Illinois Research Park (UIRP), supporting project selection, recruitment, and mentoring of interns, and facilitating collaborations with the University of Illinois. Responsibilities and Objectives: Collaborate with cross-functional teams to understand data needs and requirements for optimizing manufacturing processes.Azure cloud tools - Data factory and Data bricksDevelop and implement data engineering solutions, including data models, architectures, and pipelines, to integrate data from SQL Server, SAP, and other sources.Build and maintain Power BI reports and dashboards for plant leaders and stakeholders, replicating efforts for multiple plants and projects.Utilize sensor data from connected devices for predictive modeling and machine learning applications, contributing to smart factory initiatives.Replicate and adapt Azure projects to other locations, employing similar techniques to manage data inflows and utilize Power BI reports more broadly.Automate manual data entry processes across various business segments using Power Apps and Power Automate, enhancing operational efficiency.Assist with future data warehouse modeling and building efforts, including projects for other plants and manufacturing facilities.Provide technical leadership and support for data engineering projects within UIRP, including project selection, recruitment, and mentoring of interns.Act as an expert advisor to UIRP management, facilitating collaborations with the University of Illinois and guiding the development of a proficient team in AI solutions.Collaborate with team members on AI/ML research and development projects, contributing expertise in data modeling and analysis.Preferred Skills and Qualifications: Strong proficiency in data engineering concepts and methodologies, including data modeling, ETL processes, and data visualization.Experience with tools and technologies such as Power BI, SQL Server, SAP, Azure, and sensor integration platforms. Database architecture would be nice but not required.Excellent communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to work effectively in cross-functional teams and communicate technical concepts to non-technical stakeholders.Demonstrated problem-solving abilities and attention to detail, with a focus on delivering high-quality, scalable solutions.Master’s degree Data Engineering, Computer Science or a related field preferred.Previous experience with smart factory initiatives, IoT, AI/ML, LLMs or digital transformation projects is a plus.
