Beyond Good & Evil 2 is an open-world action-adventure game set in a captivating space opera universe. It is also the direct prequel to the 2003 classic! Thanks to the technological advancements provided by our proprietary Voyager engine, Beyond Good & Evil 2 aims to offer an organic, seamless experience of exploration and space piracy on a solar system scale, featuring exotic locations, colorful characters, and numerous mysteries to uncover—either solo or with friends. The Level Design team builds the key locations of an open world; it needs a leader to structure, streamline, and elevate the overall quality.

What you’ll do:

Responsibilities:

You’ll be at the heart of design decisions, working directly with the project leads.

Vision & Consistency

  • Define and communicate the level design vision with the leads (World, Game, Narrative, Art)
  • Ensure consistency across locations, from concept through final implementation
  • Develop a clear and understandable design language for the player

Design & Player Experience

  • Ensure the creation of gameplay situations that are clear, intuitive, and engaging
  • Strive for simplicity, challenge complexity when necessary, and refocus the experience on fun

Iteration & Continuous Improvement

  • Place playtesting at the center of the process
  • Analyze player behavior
  • Refine designs through iteration

Team Management

  • Lead a team of 6–7 Level Designers
  • Help less experienced team members develop their skills by sharing best practices
  • Empower senior team members to take ownership of key areas
  • Create a clear framework without being prescriptive: explain, persuade, and align

Organization & Documentation

  • Anticipate risks, workload, and dependencies
  • Facilitate smooth communication with the gameplay, art, and tech teams
  • Define, document, and implement simple and effective processes
  • Document best practices and world-building guidelines

Your future work environment:

You’ll join a team of level designers and report to the World Director: Cédric BARTHEZ

What We’re Looking For:

You have previously worked on AAA games and have shipped multiple games—these are mandatory requirements for supporting our teams.

Knowledge of open-world games is a plus!

You’re comfortable:

  • taking a step back to look at a system objectively
  • simplifying a complex experience
  • putting yourself in the player’s shoes

Key Skills for This Role

Level Design

  • Excellent proficiency in 3D level design
  • Strong UX sensibility applied to level design

Methodology & Production

  • Experience with iterative design (prototype → test → improvement)
  • Ability to anticipate problems and dependencies
  • Good understanding of 3D engines and pipelines

Communication & Leadership

  • Ability to justify your decisions
  • Challenge requests without causing roadblocks
  • Find the right balance between quality, time, and constraints
  • Communicate regularly

Structuring

  • Be comfortable with documentation
  • Establish clear processes
  • Provide transparency to the team

The recruitment process:

  • Introductory Meeting (1 hour): A conversation with a member of the recruitment team to get to know you better and assess whether your background aligns with our expectations.
  • Project Interview (1 hour): A discussion with the Hiring Manager, with a more technical focus, to delve into the specifics and ensure we’re on the same page.
  • Lead Assessment (1 hour): If you successfully complete all previous steps, you’ll meet with our Talent Development Manager to discuss team leadership.

As part of our recruitment process, you may be asked to complete a practical case study.
