Lead Platform Engineer, Mehiläinen Oy

Posted Updated
Discussion

Founded in 1909, Mehiläinen is a rapidly growing healthcare company that strongly invests in the possibilities of digitalisation and innovation. We are on a journey towards an ambitious goal: to be the leading healthcare company in Europe by 2030. Our growth story has already taken us to seven countries, driven by modern technology and the experts who make us a frontrunner in the industry. IT plays a strategic role here — we are a business enabler.

We are building a new Group-level cloud environment on Azure and Google Cloud, and we are looking for a Lead Platform Engineer to design and build it. This is not a migration of what already exists — it is a clean-sheet foundation for the Group's digital services for the next decade, and we intend to build the platform to a standard we are genuinely proud of.

The platform is a product: it has users — our engineering teams across the Group — a roadmap, interfaces, a release cycle and a quality bar. We want it designed, written, tested and versioned like software, because that is the only way it stays good after the first year.

Scope of impact

As a Lead Platform Engineer, you will own the Group's cloud platform as a product, working across the following domains to drive technical outcomes, grow team capability, and ensure reliability, security, and regulatory compliance across seven countries.

  • Platform as a product: self-service tooling and golden paths for engineering teams

  • Cloud foundation: Azure/GCP landing zones, identity, multi-cloud strategy

  • Infrastructure & delivery: IaC, CI/CD, container orchestration, supply-chain security

  • AI-driven development: production use and governance of AI coding tools

  • Non-functional & compliance: reliability, observability, GDPR/ISO 27001/NIS2

  • Leadership: roadmap ownership, mentoring, stakeholder alignment

Requirements

  • Many years of professional software development experience, including technical lead, platform lead, or architect roles, with a primary focus on platform, infrastructure, or developer experience.

  • Deep, hands-on experience building cloud environments on Azure and/or GCP, including landing zone or foundation-level design.

  • Expert-level Infrastructure as Code, primarily Terraform or OpenTofu — you write modules that other people depend on, not one-off configurations.

  • Deep understanding of and practical experience with modern architectural principles, container orchestration and CI/CD at scale.

  • Ability to translate complex business requirements into platform capabilities, considering non-functional requirements and regulatory compliance.

  • Proven track record of successfully applying AI-driven development in production work.

  • Demonstrated ability to define and enforce engineering standards, conduct effective engineering reviews, and drive a culture of technical excellence across teams.

  • Experience owning a technical roadmap and contributing to product and architecture decisions at a strategic level.

  • Experience working in healthcare, finance or another regulated industry, with a solid understanding of compliance and data privacy requirements (GDPR, ISO 27001 or equivalent).

  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills.

  • Proven ability to mentor and develop engineers, growing individual and team capability over time.

  • Fluent English (written and spoken); Finnish language is considered an advantage.

  • A relevant higher education degree (e.g. computer science, software engineering, information systems or equivalent); significant practical experience may be considered in lieu of a formal degree.

Considered an advantage

  • Genuine multi-cloud experience — you have run Azure, GCP or AWS side by side and know where the abstraction leaks.

  • Internal developer platform experience, including developer experience measurement (DORA metrics, lead time, adoption).

  • Policy-as-code (Azure Policy, OPA/Gatekeeper) and compliance automation.

  • Data platform or AI/ML workload infrastructure experience.

  • Open source contributions or public technical writing.

Personal success factors

  • A growth mindset — you enjoy challenges and embrace opportunities to develop both professionally and personally.

  • A hands-on, can-do attitude — you are not afraid to roll up your sleeves and take ownership.

  • Comfort navigating ambiguity and making pragmatic decisions under pressure.

  • Strong sense of ownership and accountability for quality and outcomes.

  • A collaborative spirit that brings out the best in the people around you.

Why join Mehiläinen?

We are all committed to acting in line with our values, and we believe the best results come from giving our experts freedom, responsibility, community and opportunities to grow.

This role is a genuine clean sheet. Very few organisations get to design a Group cloud foundation from scratch with a mandate to do it properly — this is that. The work reaches millions of people across seven countries, and its reliability is felt in clinics and care work, not only in dashboards.

We offer the opportunity to work with modern technologies and innovative solutions in a challenging and diverse role, alongside a professional and supportive team. You can choose your own work equipment, enjoy a variety of activities to balance work life, and have the opportunity to work flexibly in a hybrid setup.
