At Community Care Ambulance, the Lieutenant serves as a frontline operational leader responsible for supporting daily EMS operations while providing direct leadership to field personnel. This position helps ensure operational readiness, clinical excellence, and efficient service delivery across all assigned units.

The Lieutenant serves as the first level of operational leadership, working closely with Captains to support field operations, mentor employees, solve operational challenges, and maintain system readiness throughout each shift.

This position is ideal for experienced Paramedics who are ready to begin their leadership journey while maintaining an active clinical role in the field. Lieutenants serve as the bridge between frontline crews and operational leadership, ensuring patient care, responder safety, and operational efficiency remain aligned at all times.

Leadership development is a core expectation of this position. Each Lieutenant works under the guidance of a Captain while developing the operational, administrative, and leadership skills necessary for future advancement. Through mentoring, coaching, and hands-on experience, Lieutenants are prepared to become the next generation of Captains and operational leaders.

We provide 911 emergency response, interfacility transport, emergency communications, and disaster deployment services throughout Northeast Ohio.


Lieutenant – Duties & Responsibilities

(The duties listed are not all-inclusive but represent the essential functions of the role.)


Role Overview

The Lieutenant serves as the on-duty frontline operational leader responsible for supporting field operations, maintaining system readiness, and assisting Captains in ensuring effective EMS service delivery. This position provides leadership, coordination, and operational support while promoting clinical excellence and employee development.

The Lieutenant also functions as a working Paramedic when operational needs require direct patient care.


Operational Leadership (35%)

  • Serve as the on-duty operational leader during assigned shifts.
  • Support Captains in overseeing daily field operations and EMS personnel.
  • Assist in coordinating system status management and deployment plans.
  • Help maintain operational readiness and efficient unit utilization.
  • Respond to field requests and operational challenges while exercising sound judgment.
  • Provide real-time problem-solving and support for field crews.
  • Assist with operational continuity during periods of high call volume, special events, and emergency incidents.
  • Serve as a liaison between field personnel, Communications, healthcare facilities, and public safety agencies.

Clinical & Field Responsibilities (30%)

  • Perform all duties of a Paramedic in accordance with state and local protocols.
  • Provide advanced life support and direct patient care when assigned.
  • Respond to high-acuity incidents requiring additional clinical support.
  • Assist crews with patient care, scene management, and clinical decision-making.
  • Ensure accurate, complete, and timely patient care documentation.
  • Maintain all required certifications, licensure, and continuing education.

Leadership & Personnel Development (15%)

  • Provide daily leadership, coaching, and support to assigned field personnel.
  • Promote professionalism, accountability, teamwork, and employee engagement.
  • Mentor employees through positive coaching and performance feedback.
  • Identify performance concerns and communicate them to Captains.
  • Assist with onboarding, orientation, and field integration of new employees.
  • Support Field Training Officers and educational initiatives.
  • Lead by example while fostering a positive work environment.

Equipment, Fleet & System Readiness (10%)

  • Ensure ambulances, response vehicles, and medical equipment remain operational and deployment ready.
  • Conduct vehicle inspections and equipment readiness checks.
  • Monitor medical supply inventory and report shortages.
  • Assist with maintaining operational readiness standards across assigned units.
  • Ensure proper documentation of equipment deficiencies and corrective actions.

Administrative Responsibilities (5%)

  • Complete operational reports, shift documentation, and required incident reports.
  • Communicate operational updates to Captains and incoming shifts.
  • Collaborate with Communications to ensure efficient resource management.
  • Assist with implementation of contingency plans during operational disruptions.
  • Maintain confidentiality regarding personnel, operational, and patient information.

  • Demonstrate integrity, accountability, and professionalism in every interaction.
  • Communicate effectively with employees, patients, healthcare partners, and the public.
  • Exercise sound judgment in dynamic and high-pressure environments.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Current Ohio Paramedic certification (or ability to obtain prior to employment)
  • Valid driver's license with an acceptable driving record
  • Minimum experience requirements established by Community Care Ambulance
  • Demonstrated leadership potential with strong interpersonal and communication skills
  • Ability to make sound operational decisions in fast-paced environments
  • Ability to mentor, coach, and motivate employees
  • Proficiency with EMS documentation systems, scheduling software, and Microsoft Office applications
