Cable Rewind - Responsible for rewinding and cutting cables to meet specific customer order length; rewinding in-process cores or finished cable that has an unacceptable wind, or a potential problem (customer return, process problem, damage).
Responsible for the setup and operation of the cable stripping/sheave removal equipment and scrap take-ups including banding and removal of scrap generated as a result of the stripping operations. Operates a forklift to move or relocate reels at the rewinder area. Repairs cable jacket defects, cable print, or binder on stranded cores and removes fiberglass or Kevlar from cores to be reprocessed.
Tension Member -- Responsible for the setup, operation and troubleshooting of extrusion equipment/process for the purpose of placing a polyethylene sheath (jacket) over an e-glass or steel strength member. The jacketed strength member will be used as a central strength member at the stranding process. Orders raw materials (e-glass, steel, polyethylene), performs machine and quality checks, and completes paperwork and product tracking information. Cable Rewinding
a) Rewinding: Rewinds cable for various reasons, the most common being: To cut lengths from work in-process inventory, correct the layer wind problem on an in-process core or cable, or rewind a product to check a potential problem area.
b) Cable Stripping: Removal of sheave/jacket and salvage of optical core for reprocessing. The cable sheave/jacket is removed due to problems, which occurred at the jacketing process, during handling (in-house), shipping or installation (customer return). This is a process which requires constant attention to detail and close adherence to procedural methods and practices.
c) Cable Repair: Repairs sections of a cable or core that does not meet specifications.
To repair cable requires special training and certification, due to the wide range of
repairs/problems. These problems include jacket holes, skip, lumps, scratches; removal of fiberglass or kevlar strength elements; repair of missing or broken binder on the fiber optic core; repair of missing cable print.
d) General Support/Miscellaneous Duties: Coils and cuts scrap ripcord, plastic and cable; uses forklift to position cables at the rewind area. Obtains supplies, works on the monthly inventory detail. Maintains a clean neat and safe work environment.
Tension Member Jacketing
a) Machine Setup: Reads production order and gathers needed tooling, supplies and materials, checks setup information to determine operating parameters. Changes and cleans extruder tooling and makes adjustments, loads payoff and take-up reels, checks and sets payoff and take-up traverse set points, enters diameter tolerance into Target System. Strings up the product to be jacketed through the extruder head, water troughs and attaches to the take-up reel. Performs startup, process/troubleshooting and quality checks.
b) Machine Operation: Monitors the tension member jacket process to maintainefficient operation., checks and maintains the operating levels of the extruder hopper and water tank/troughs, monitors the extrusion system controls and makes adjustments such as -- operating speed, extruder rpm, heat zones, reviews and maintains take-up tension, winding condition, performs quality checks and records data.
c) General Support/Miscellaneous Duties: Performs cleaning of the extruder crosshead and screw, changes breaker plate screens and cleans extruder tooling, cleans water trough, target gauge and air wipe system to ensure continuous operation. Maintains a clean neat and safe work environment.
