Mid-Level Hydrogeologist
Description
About the Job
GSI Environmental is seeking a Mid-Level Hydrogeologist / Groundwater Modeler to join our growing mining team. If you are interested in applying strong hydrogeologic fundamentals, numerical modeling, and data analysis to complex mine water problems, this is an opportunity to work directly with experienced GSI hydrogeologists, engineers, geochemists, and permitting specialists on projects throughout the U.S. and internationally.
This position will have a strong groundwater modeling focus. The successful candidate will help develop conceptual hydrogeologic models; build, calibrate, and apply numerical groundwater flow and contaminant transport models; evaluate mine dewatering, seepage, groundwater impacts, and closure conditions; and communicate model results in clear technical reports and client-ready presentations.
Responsibilities:
- Develop and refine conceptual hydrogeologic models using geologic, hydraulic, groundwater level, pumping, recharge, climate, and water quality data.
- Build, calibrate, document, and apply numerical groundwater flow models using the MODFLOW-family codes and common pre/post-processing platforms.
- Perform predictive simulations for open pit and underground mine dewatering, depressurization, pit inflow, seepage, groundwater drawdown, recovery, closure, and long-term water management scenarios.
- Support contaminant transport and groundwater quality evaluations.
- Perform model calibration, sensitivity analyses, uncertainty analyses, water budget evaluations, and scenario comparisons; support parameter estimation using PEST or similar tools.
- Develop and maintain efficient model workflows using Python/FloPy, R, GIS, databases, and other data management or visualization tools.
- Support hydrogeologic field programs, including drilling, monitoring well installation, aquifer testing, packer testing, groundwater monitoring, and data collection needed to constrain conceptual and numerical models.
- Interpret aquifer test and monitoring data and integrate results into project conceptual models and numerical model inputs.
- Prepare technical memoranda, modeling reports, figures, tables, proposals, and presentations with limited senior staff oversight.
- Coordinate with geochemists, hydrologists, and permitting specialists to integrate groundwater modeling into mine planning, permitting, operations, and closure evaluations.
- Communicate modeling assumptions, limitations, uncertainty, and results to project managers, clients, and regulators.
- Support project management activities, including scope development, budgeting, schedule tracking, and coordination with internal staff and subcontractors.
