Network Engineer - Cisco

Summary

A 12-month contract Network Engineer role with Helix Technology Services supporting a Defence/federal government engagement in Canberra. Day to day involves designing and implementing physical and virtual networks at enterprise scale using Cisco, VMWare SDDC, BGP, firewalls, and automation tooling like Terraform and Ansible, with NV1 security clearance required.

As a result of a secured engagement with one of our Defence partners, Helix requires a Network Engineer to join us on a 12 month contract with possible extensions.

We're looking for a Network Engineer with proven experience of solving complex problems, who thrives working as part of a team to push boundaries and is passionate about leveraging technology to produce world-class outcomes for critical federal government organisations.


The Network Engineer key responsibilities:

  • Physical network design and implementation across several network security domains at enterprise scale
  • Virtual network design and implementation within a VMWare based SDDC
  • Automating the deployment, configuration, and ongoing management of network devices across a variety of vendors
  • Enabling the automated operational and security monitoring of network devices across a variety of vendors.
  • Working closely with other disciplines within the delivery team to ensure that the services and applications being deployed align to networking solution best practices
  • Development of detailed design and operational artefacts supporting the delivery
  • Assisting with planning for a multi-phase delivery

Network Engineer essential experience & capability:
  • Designing, deploying, and managing enterprise routers and switches, including Cisco
  • Expert understanding of Border Gateway Protocol
  • Strong understanding of networking best practices within a SDDC, and virtual networking in general
  • Understanding of Cisco ACI fabric
  • Working with Radius based identity and authentication controls and their integration with Active Directory
  • A detailed knowledge of the TCP/IP protocol, including VLAN configuration
  • A detailed knowledge of DNS and DHCP
  • Deploying and configuring enterprise firewalls
  • Working with Network Management Systems and the BGP protocol
  • Troubleshooting complex network related issues
  • NV1 clearance is a minimum requirement for this environment

Network Engineer desirable experience:
  • Cisco qualifications
  • Automating network device configuration
  • Automating network device backup and restore
  • A working knowledge of 3rd party automation tools including Terraform and Ansible
  • Working with VMWare products
  • Working in a DevSecOps model to develop and promote code or configuration, with a strong emphasis on CI/CD methodologies
  • Understanding of Essential 8 and conforming with ISM requirements
  • Packet capture techniques across a variety of network devices and vendors.
  • Proven ability to work independently, and within a multi-discipline team
  • Proven ability to mentor and influence team members
  • Proven ability to work to a project schedule and achieve successful client-focused outcomes
  • Demonstrable experience proving a customer focus and passion for delivery
  • Excellent communication and reporting skills
  • Ability to conduct research, as well as rapidly learn new concepts and tasks, with a view of improving technical knowledge and skills.
