Discussion

The Network Engineer, Mid designs, implements, and manages segments of the enterprise network that support mission‑critical systems and secure connectivity between sites, data centers, and cloud environments. The role delivers moderately complex projects such as deploying new network segments, optimizing routing paths, and improving resiliency and performance across multi‑site infrastructures. It serves as a key escalation point for network incidents, performing root‑cause analysis and implementing permanent fixes for recurring issues. The engineer collaborates closely with security and systems teams to ensure network architectures align with zero‑trust principles, monitoring strategies, and compliance expectations in a highly regulated government environment.

Key Responsibilities

  • Configure and troubleshoot enterprise routing, switching, and wireless solutions, including advanced VLAN design, quality of service, and redundancy mechanisms.
  • Plan and implement network changes such as new circuits, site turn‑ups, firewall or VPN configurations, and data‑center network enhancements, following structured change‑management processes.
  • Use network monitoring and performance‑management tools to detect anomalies, perform capacity planning, and optimize utilization and resilience of network paths.
  • Document network architectures and changes with high‑level diagrams, detailed configuration records, inventories, and change plans that support audits and operational handoffs.
  • Apply security best practices to harden network infrastructure, including access control, device authentication, patching, and logging appropriate for regulated environments.
  • Act as an escalation point for complex network incidents, performing deep diagnosis, isolating root cause, and implementing permanent corrective actions.
  • Contribute to SDN, SD‑WAN, and automation efforts by supporting templated configurations, scripted changes, and standardized deployment patterns.
  • Partner with cloud, systems, and security teams to support hybrid connectivity between on‑premises networks and major cloud providers.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in IT, Computer Science, Network Engineering, or a related field, or equivalent work experience.
  • Typically 4–7 years of hands‑on experience in network engineering or a closely related role in enterprise or government environments.
  • Strong understanding of core networking concepts and prior experience with major network vendors such as Cisco and Juniper.
  • Proficiency with configuration and troubleshooting methods, processes, and tools such as packet analyzers and flow tools.
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks effectively with strong problem‑solving, analytical, communication, and interpersonal skills.
  • Awareness of current trends and requirements in network engineering and data security best practices.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Industry certifications such as CCNA or CCNP that validate intermediate‑level networking expertise.
  • Experience supporting hybrid environments that integrate on‑premises networks with major cloud platforms.
