Operations Manager

Howmet Structure Systems – Martinsville Operations is seeking an Operations Manager. The Operations Manager will report to the Plant Manager. The primary purpose of the Operations Manager position is to lead the manufacturing organization to safely deliver or exceed the financial plan, while increasing product quality. They will be measured on both financial and non-financial indicators directly related to safety, quality, employee engagement, on-time delivery, and profitability. The candidate will be responsible for planning and directing manufacturing activities to fulfil production schedules, as well as ensuring plant performance is meeting or exceeding established targets. This candidate will also be responsible for driving improvements using Lean practices.

Position Duties:

  • Lead by example and use human performance tools to promote a culture of safety and welfare of our employees.
  • Manage leading and lagging indicators and determining linked actions that will reduce risk in the workplace.
  • Sets a high standard for ethics and compliance, ensuring business processes adhere to our business conduct policies and procedures.
  • Implement continuous improvement strategies to increase safety, efficiency, productivity, cost, yield improvement, scrap reduction, and customer delivery.
  • Lead manufacturing operations in accordance with company policies, goals and objectives which may include assessing process capability, improving process control and instilling a culture of personal accountability of quality
  • Executes the vision for the organization by formulating and guiding the implementation of long (2-5 years) and short-range plans, policies and programs associated with assigned business unit product offerings, within the broad framework of operating unit and corporate strategy and under the direction of senior management to achieve approved objectives.
  • Develops and executes lean and flexible production systems based on Continuous Improvement principals.
  • Executes plans for quality and process excellence that ensures consistent quality assurance and process excellence procedures, controls and feedback.
  • Leads a multi-disciplined plant team in meeting monthly forecasts and all appropriate business metrics.
  • Manages an effective team including hiring, motivating, evaluating, developing and counseling with career development.
  • Adheres to operational budgets and coordinates capital plans, appropriation requests, and project follow up.
  • Establishes the goals and metrics to drive improvement and refine activities as needed with monitoring the projected effects of long-range operational forecasts on the business unit, revenues, market share, human resource needs, and monitor effects of these projects in relation to the “external gross profit”.
  • Maintains an awareness of, and exercises sound business judgment in such areas as market conditions, competitive activities, general economic conditions and related matters.
  • Champions a clear channel of communication and coordination between cross - functional counterparts in the business units – marketing, engineering, finance, manufacturing, operations, and quality and external to business unit, customer service, sales, sales administration, technical services and distribution.
  • Ensures that effective business unit systems, procedures and financial controls are established and maintained for the business unit’s operations.

Basic Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree and/or a minimum of 5 years of experience in plant operational management
  • Employees must be legally authorized to work in the United States. Verification of employment. eligibility will be required at the time of hire. Visa sponsorship is not available for this position.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Engineering, Business Management or related field; equivalent in lieu of a degree may be considered. MBA a plus.
  • Metals, Forging and maintenance background a plus.
  • Seven plus years in supervisory/management role with strong leadership, communication and organizational skills.
  • Formal training in Lean Manufacturing and/or Six Sigma preferred.
  • Intermediate to advanced skill level in Microsoft Office. Experience with SAP a plus.
