Remote contract role building, automating, and operating a self-hosted Renovate dependency-update platform across a very large GitLab landscape for a German energy-sector client. Day to day: GitLab CI/CD and API automation, Kubernetes deployments, OpenTofu/Helm IaC, observability (New Relic), and Vault secrets management.
Role Summary
Technical implementation role focused on building, automating, operating, and scaling the Renovate platform across a very large GitLab landscape.
Key Responsibilities:
- Implement and deploy the self-hosted Renovate environment
- Build automated repository discovery and onboarding processes via GitLab APIs
- Create and maintain central configuration presets and repository-level extensions
- Implement monitoring, logging, alerting, and reporting dashboards
- Optimize performance, scalability, caching, and rate-limit handling
- Integrate artifact repositories and secure credential stores
- Produce operational documentation and support development teams during rollout
- Ensure stable operation across thousands of repositories
Required Skills:
- Proven experience as DevOps, Platform, or Automation Engineer
- Strong GitLab CI/CD and GitLab API expertise
- Hands-on experience with Kubernetes and container platforms
- Infrastructure-as-Code knowledge (e.g. OpenTofu, Helm)
- Scripting/programming skills (Bash, Python, JavaScript/TypeScript)
- Experience with observability platforms, ideally New Relic
- Knowledge of Vault, secrets management, and package/container registries
- Practical Renovate experience
- Strong automation mindset and independent working style
