Principal Engineer - Bridges
Purpose of Role:
- Responsible for planning and managing project delivery, ensuring adequacy of design, compliance with standards, and control over cost, time, and quality.
Role Summary
- Lead and manage a small team of engineers and technicians.
- Deliver engineering design, assessments, and inspection reports.
- Take ownership of financial and project management.
- Ensure technical excellence, health & safety compliance, and timely delivery.
- Align delivery with WSP Ways of Working (WoW) and maintain document control.
- Proactively manage interfaces and inputs across disciplines.
- Support mentoring, training, and self-development initiatives.
Technical & Project Delivery
- Undertake bridge design, assessment, and strengthening solutions.
- Carry out feasibility studies for repair and strengthening.
- Ensure compliance with design standards, health & safety, and WSP procedures.
- Supervise preparation and checking of calculations, drawings, reports, and specifications.
- Perform technical reviews and quality checks of team outputs.
Team Leadership & Management
- Assist discipline leadership in managing a team of engineers and technicians.
- Allocate resources and manage workload peaks and troughs.
- Provide guidance and oversight to junior engineers.
Project & Commercial Management
- Agree and monitor project scope and deliverables.
- Support fee proposals, resource planning, and programme delivery.
- Manage change control and ensure alignment with client expectations.
- Ensure delivery within agreed time and fee constraints.
Stakeholder & Client Engagement
- Liaise with internal and external stakeholders to ensure clarity of requirements.
- Build collaborative relationships with client teams and international WSP offices.
- Provide regular updates and reporting to leadership.
Quality, Safety & Governance
- Promote technical excellence and continuous improvement.
- Ensure compliance with health & safety and WSP quality standards.
- Maintain strong QA/QC processes across deliverables.
Key Competencies & Skills
Mandatory
- Chartered Engineer (ICE / IStructE) or working towards the same.
- Minimum 8 years’ international (relevant) experience.
- Strong expertise in:
- Bridge engineering and structural design
- Assessment and rehabilitation
- Steel and RCC/PSC bridge structures
Desirable
- Experience with Eurocodes and international standards.
• B.Tech / M.Tech in Civil Engineering.
• Chartered or progressing towards chartership (ICE / IStructE).
