This position provides hands-on leadership in a fast-paced food manufacturing environment, overseeing daily production activities, workforce performance, labor utilization, and operational efficiency. The supervisor works closely with Quality Assurance, Maintenance, Warehouse, and other operational teams to meet production schedules, fulfill customer orders, minimize waste, and maintain a safe, clean, and productive work environment.

The ideal candidate is a proactive, results-driven leader who can motivate employees, make sound decisions under pressure, maintain accountability, and balance production demands with food safety, product quality, and employee safety.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

1. Retail Tray Pack Operations

  • Supervise and coordinate all second-shift tray pack production activities to ensure products meet retail specifications, labeling requirements, packaging standards, and presentation expectations.
  • Monitor production flow, line performance, and output to ensure daily production goals and customer order deadlines are met.
  • Ensure proper portioning, weighing, packaging, labeling, coding, and product rotation in accordance with customer specifications and applicable regulatory requirements.
  • Review production schedules and staffing needs to allocate labor effectively and maintain appropriate coverage throughout the shift.
  • Monitor product changeovers, line setups, and production transitions to minimize downtime and maintain operational efficiency.
  • Identify and address production bottlenecks, equipment interruptions, staffing shortages, and workflow issues that may affect output or order fulfillment.
  • Coordinate with Warehouse and other departments to ensure the timely availability of raw materials, packaging supplies, labels, and other production necessities.
  • Ensure finished products are properly handled, identified, and staged for the next step in the distribution process.

2. Team Leadership and Development

  • Lead, coach, and develop tray pack team members to promote productivity, engagement, accountability, and consistent performance.
  • Communicate daily production assignments, performance expectations, safety requirements, and shift priorities clearly to employees.
  • Monitor employee performance and provide timely feedback, coaching, and corrective action when appropriate.
  • Enforce company policies, work rules, attendance expectations, and established procedures consistently and fairly within a unionized environment.
  • Apply applicable collective bargaining agreement provisions and partner with Human Resources regarding employee relations concerns, disciplinary matters, grievances, and contract interpretation as appropriate.
  • Support employee training and cross-training initiatives to improve workforce flexibility, skill development, and operational coverage.
  • Foster a respectful, team-oriented work environment that encourages communication, accountability, and collaboration.
  • Ensure employees understand their responsibilities and are properly trained before performing assigned tasks.

3. Quality Assurance and Food Safety

  • Ensure strict adherence to applicable food safety, sanitation, HACCP, USDA, FDA, and SQF requirements, as well as company policies and customer-specific standards.
  • Monitor product quality, appearance, weight, packaging integrity, labeling accuracy, and code dating to ensure retail customer expectations are consistently met.
  • Partner with Quality Assurance to address product quality concerns, inspection findings, nonconformances, and corrective actions.
  • Ensure employees follow established procedures for product handling, temperature control, allergen controls where applicable, and prevention of cross-contamination.
  • Immediately escalate food safety concerns, potential product contamination, labeling discrepancies, and other issues that could affect product integrity or customer compliance.
  • Support product holds, investigations, rework, and other corrective actions as directed by Quality Assurance and company procedures.
  • Ensure required production, quality, and food safety documentation is completed accurately and on time.
  • Promote a culture in which food safety and product quality take priority over production speed when the two are in conflict.

4. Employee Safety and Sanitation

  • Enforce company safety policies, personal protective equipment requirements, and safe work practices throughout the tray pack operation.
  • Ensure employees follow established procedures when operating production equipment, handling materials, and working around moving machinery.
  • Conduct routine inspections of the production area to identify unsafe conditions, housekeeping concerns, and potential hazards.
  • Ensure production areas, equipment, and workstations are maintained in a clean, organized, and sanitary condition in accordance with company procedures.
  • Promptly report workplace injuries, near misses, equipment hazards, and other safety concerns through established reporting procedures.
  • Partner with Safety, Sanitation, Maintenance, and other departments to address hazards and maintain a safe production environment.
  • Reinforce proper shutdown, cleaning, and sanitation procedures, including required pre-operational checks and release procedures before production resumes.

5. Production Efficiency and Continuous Improvement

  • Monitor daily production performance against established goals for output, labor efficiency, yield, waste, and product quality.
  • Identify opportunities to improve tray pack line performance, reduce material waste, minimize product giveaway, and improve yield.
  • Review production results and investigate recurring issues affecting efficiency, downtime, rework, or labor utilization.
  • Support continuous improvement initiatives focused on workflow optimization, standardization, cost control, and productivity.
  • Ensure proper operation and care of tray pack equipment and promptly communicate maintenance needs.
  • Collaborate with Maintenance to troubleshoot equipment issues, reduce downtime, and support timely repairs.
  • Promote employee involvement in identifying process improvements and resolving recurring operational challenges.
  • Help establish and reinforce consistent operating procedures and best practices across the production team.

6. Labor Management and Cost Control

  • Develop and manage daily staffing plans based on production requirements, employee availability, and operational priorities.
  • Monitor attendance, overtime, staffing levels, and labor utilization to support production goals while controlling labor costs.
  • Adjust employee assignments and line coverage as needed to respond to changes in production volume, absences, and operational demands.
  • Identify and communicate labor variances and opportunities to improve productivity without compromising safety, quality, or customer requirements.
  • Ensure employees are assigned appropriately based on their training, qualifications, and applicable work rules.
  • Partner with management and Human Resources to address recurring attendance, performance, and staffing challenges.

7. Reporting, Documentation, and Accountability

  • Track and report daily production output, labor utilization, downtime, yield, waste, quality issues, and other key performance indicators.
  • Maintain accurate and timely production records, staffing reports, quality documentation, and other required operational records.
  • Review shift performance against production targets and identify opportunities for corrective action and improvement.
  • Communicate shift results, operational challenges, equipment issues, staffing concerns, and improvement opportunities to the appropriate leadership.
  • Provide clear shift handoffs to ensure outstanding production issues, equipment concerns, product holds, and staffing needs are communicated to the next responsible team.
  • Ensure production documentation is complete, accurate, and readily available for internal reviews, audits, and customer or regulatory requirements.
  • Follow up on assigned corrective actions and ensure identified issues are addressed in a timely manner.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned to support business and operational needs.
