Project Manager Intern - Mechanical

Summary

A construction project management internship at GEMCO, a national mechanical contractor. The intern supports live HVAC and process piping projects day to day: routing submittals and RFIs, tracking purchase orders, assisting with estimating takeoffs, attending coordination meetings, walking job sites, and maintaining documentation and cost/schedule reports in Procore.

ABOUT THE ROLE

GEMCO is a national mechanical, electrical, plumbing, building automation, and service contractor. We self perform our work, which means our interns sit inside real project teams rather than on the outside watching. You will be assigned to live HVAC and process piping projects and carry actual pieces of them from preconstruction through closeout.

WHAT YOU WILL DO

Support active commercial mechanical projects: HVAC systems, hydronic and process piping, ductwork, and equipment

Log and route submittals and requests for information, requisition materials, and follow purchase orders and long lead equipment through delivery

Assist the estimating team with material takeoffs, quantity checks, and pricing support for change requests

Sit in on coordination meetings with the general contractor and trade partners, and track issues to resolution

Walk sites with the superintendent and foremen, compare installed work against the drawings and schedule, and support manpower planning

Help maintain project documentation in Procore, including daily reports, drawing sets, and as built markups

Help prepare progress, cost, and schedule reports, and support monthly billing and contract financial tracking

Support equipment startup, testing, and commissioning documentation on projects reaching completion

Assist with punch list tracking and closeout deliverables such as operation manuals and warranty packages

Follow GEMCO safety expectations in the office and on every site you visit

WHAT YOU WILL LEARN

How a mechanical project moves from estimate and award through buyout, installation, startup, and closeout

How labor hours, material costs, and schedule interact, and what a project manager watches weekly

How to read and coordinate mechanical drawings against structural, electrical, and plumbing systems

How a project manager protects the financial side of a contract while keeping the customer relationship strong

Direct exposure to our project managers through The GEMCO Way, our project manager training program

WHAT WE LOOK FOR

Working toward a degree in Mechanical Engineering or Engineering Technology, Construction Management, Building Construction Management, or a related program

Sophomore standing or above preferred, though we consider strong first year students

Able to work in an office and on active construction sites with the required personal protective equipment

Developing skill in reading plans and specifications, and comfortable with the math behind takeoffs and cost tracking

Organized, responsive, and willing to ask questions early rather than guess

Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation for site visits

Working knowledge of Microsoft Excel and Outlook

HELPFUL BUT NOT REQUIRED

Prior construction, trade, or field experience of any kind

Exposure to Procore, Bluebeam, ComputerEase, AutoCAD, or Revit
