Do you enjoy taking an engineering idea and turning it into something you can actually build, program, assemble and test?

I'm working with an established Swiss high-tech company looking to strengthen its advanced engineering team with a multidisciplinary Development Engineer.

This is a highly practical role for someone who doesn't want to be restricted to just electronics, software or mechanical engineering. You will work across all three, developing physical demonstrators and experimental systems used to explore new technologies and future product possibilities.

You could be designing a component in CAD one day, integrating electronics and writing embedded code the next, before taking the complete system into the lab for testing.

Your role

You will take ownership of practical engineering projects from initial idea through to a working demonstrator.

Your work will include:

  • Designing and building electromechanical prototypes and experimental systems
  • Integrating electronic components, microcontrollers and mechanical assemblies
  • Developing and adapting embedded software / firmware for prototype applications
  • Creating mechanical parts and assemblies using 3D CAD
  • Using 3D printing and other rapid-manufacturing techniques to produce prototype components
  • Selecting and integrating suitable components, interfaces and technologies
  • Assembling, debugging and testing complete systems in the laboratory
  • Running experiments to understand technical feasibility and performance
  • Rapidly modifying designs based on test results and engineering feedback
  • Working alongside specialists from different technical disciplines to solve complex development challenges

What we are looking for

We're particularly interested in engineers with a broad technical foundation rather than specialists who want to remain within one narrow discipline.

You should ideally bring:

Degree in Mechatronics, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Systems Engineering or a comparable technical discipline
Practical electronics development experience
Exposure to microcontrollers / embedded software / firmware
Mechanical design and 3D CAD experience
Experience with 3D printing or rapid prototyping
Confidence building and troubleshooting physical systems
Strong practical engineering and problem-solving ability
Curiosity and willingness to learn technologies outside your core specialism

You don't need to be an expert in every area. A strong background in several of these disciplines combined with the motivation to broaden your technical capabilities is particularly interesting.
