QA Engineer - Embedded Systems & Mining Technology
Summary
Hands-on QA engineer at a Brisbane mining-technology company (part of a global mining/construction equipment OEM), testing onboard embedded Linux systems written in C/C++ on mining equipment, plus offboard .NET web apps, APIs and Azure services. Roughly two-thirds embedded focus, with Playwright automation and Python/SQL/shell scripting.
The company is part of a global OEM and technology provider specialising in mining and construction equipment, providing the backing and international reach of a major global organisation while retaining the innovative, collaborative culture of an Australian technology company.
Its integrated mining operational technology connects onboard systems installed on mobile mining equipment with offboard applications, web platforms and cloud services. These solutions provide real-time operational data, helping mining companies improve productivity, operational efficiency and decision-making.
This is a predominantly hands-on QA engineering role, with a particular focus on testing complex onboard embedded systems, software logic, algorithms and interactions between interconnected technologies.
Approximately two-thirds of the technical testing focus will be on onboard embedded systems, with the remainder covering offboard applications, web interfaces, APIs and cloud services.
You will personally undertake software testing, develop and maintain automated tests, improve existing test systems and coordinate testing activities with software engineering teams.
We are particularly interested in candidates who enjoy understanding how complex systems work, investigating difficult technical problems and developing practical, reliable testing solutions.
The Role
Working closely with the Engineering Manager, Software Engineering Team Leads, developers and product stakeholders, your responsibilities will include:
- Undertake hands-on functional, exploratory, integration, regression and system testing across complex software products, with a particular emphasis on onboard embedded systems.
- Analyse software behaviour, business logic, algorithms, interfaces and interactions between interconnected systems to identify defects, edge cases and potential operational risks.
- Develop, maintain and improve automated testing systems, frameworks, scripts and reusable regression suites.
- Personally develop and maintain Playwright-based automated tests for web applications and related interfaces, building on existing automation capabilities.
- Use SQL, Python and Linux shell scripting for test-data preparation, validation, simulation, automation and troubleshooting.
- Test software operating in real-world mining environments, including intermittent connectivity, networking issues, hardware interfaces and challenging operating conditions.
- Plan and coordinate in-sprint, integration, regression, system and release testing in collaboration with software engineers.
- Review requirements, user stories and acceptance criteria to identify missing scenarios, assumptions and quality risks.
- Test integration between onboard embedded systems, offboard applications, web interfaces, APIs, databases and cloud services.
- Evaluate web application functionality, usability and end-to-end workflows, including appropriate risk-based security testing.
- Maintain established QA processes and automation frameworks, identifying and implementing practical improvements.
- Further the adoption of AI-assisted testing to improve test design, coverage analysis, test-data generation, automation and defect investigation, with appropriate review and validation.
- Manage test cases, execution cycles, defect tracking, evidence and traceability using Zephyr and Jira.
- Coordinate release regression testing and prepare consolidated reports outlining test outcomes, outstanding defects, residual risks and release readiness.
- Work collaboratively with engineers to investigate and resolve defects, improve test coverage and support reliable software releases.
Technology Environment The company's software products span onboard systems installed on mining equipment and offboard applications used to manage and optimise mining operations.
Onboard Systems – Primary Focus
The onboard technology stack is predominantly embedded Linux, with software developed in C and C++, incorporating high-precision GNSS, networking and embedded communications technologies.
These systems operate on mobile mining equipment in challenging environments, often with intermittent connectivity and complex interactions between software, hardware and external systems.
The successful candidate will need to understand and test complex software behaviour, algorithms, system interfaces and operational scenarios.
Offboard / Office Applications
The offboard technology stack is predominantly Microsoft .NET, complemented by modern web technologies, SQL databases, APIs and Microsoft Azure cloud services.
While the primary emphasis is on onboard systems, the QA Engineer will also contribute to testing these offboard applications and their integration with onboard technology.
Skills & Experience We are seeking a technically capable QA Engineer with strong analytical skills, hands-on software testing experience and the ability to understand complex, interconnected systems.
Essential Skills
- Demonstrated experience in hands-on software quality assurance, test engineering or software testing within an Agile development environment.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving capabilities, including the ability to understand complex software logic, algorithms, system behaviour and interactions across multiple technical environments.
- Practical experience developing, maintaining and improving automated testing systems, frameworks and scripts.
- Strong scripting capabilities, particularly SQL, Python and Linux shell scripting.
- Experience testing complex software systems, including functional, integration, regression and system testing.
- Ability to investigate defects, analyse unexpected system behaviour and distinguish software issues from configuration, test-data or environmental problems.
- Experience testing integrated software systems, interfaces and APIs.
- Strong understanding of test planning, test coverage, defect management and risk-based testing.
- Ability to work effectively with software engineers, coordinate testing activities and communicate technical findings and quality risks.
- Strong organisational and communication skills, with a practical, collaborative approach to problem-solving.
- Experience testing embedded Linux systems, edge devices, IoT platforms or software interacting with physical hardware.
- Experience testing complex algorithms, control logic or software operating across multiple interconnected systems.
- Knowledge of C/C++ software environments.
- Exposure to high-precision GNSS, embedded networking, TCP/IP or communications interfaces.
- Experience with Playwright or comparable automated testing frameworks. Strong experience with another automation framework is acceptable, provided you are willing to learn and use Playwright.
- Experience with C#/.NET applications, Microsoft Azure and modern web technologies.
- Familiarity with Zephyr, Jira, Git-based workflows and CI/CD pipelines.
- Experience with virtualisation or emulation tools such as QEMU.
- Experience testing software operating under intermittent connectivity or constrained resources.
- Experience using AI-assisted tools to improve software testing.
- Background in mining technology, industrial automation, fleet management, robotics or other operational technology environments.
Site Travel Occasional travel to mining sites will be required, typically one or two trips per year.
Travel will usually be within Australia, although international travel may occasionally be required.
These visits will primarily provide opportunities to become familiar with the company's technology operating in real-world mining environments and may also involve field testing and software validation.
