QA Automation Engineer
Location: Johannesburg - initially five days per week onsite, with plans to move to a hybrid model
Salary: R600,000 - R900,000 per annum
Contract: Initial 12-month fixed-term contract, with a strong likelihood of becoming permanent
Role Overview
We are seeking an experienced QA Engineer with strong automation testing skills to join a growing technology team in Johannesburg. The successful candidate will have hands-on experience developing and maintaining automated test frameworks, ideally using Cypress or Playwright.
This role will involve testing web applications, APIs and databases while working closely with developers, product teams and other stakeholders in an Agile environment.
Key Responsibilities
- Design, develop and maintain automated test frameworks using Cypress, Playwright or similar tools.
- Create and execute automated and manual test cases for web applications.
- Perform API testing using Postman and other appropriate testing tools.
- Validate backend data and application functionality using SQL queries.
- Conduct functional, integration, regression and end-to-end testing.
- Identify, document and track defects through to resolution.
- Work closely with developers to investigate issues and improve overall product quality.
- Participate in Agile ceremonies, including sprint planning, daily stand-ups, reviews and retrospectives.
- Contribute to the continuous improvement of QA processes and testing standards.
- Support the integration of automated testing into CI/CD pipelines.
- Clearly communicate testing progress, risks and quality issues to relevant stakeholders.
Essential Requirements
- Strong commercial experience working as a QA Engineer, Test Automation Engineer or similar.
- Hands-on automation testing experience.
- Experience with Cypress, Playwright or comparable automation frameworks.
- Strong API testing experience, ideally using Postman.
- Good SQL skills and experience validating data at database level.
- Experience testing modern web-based applications.
- Good understanding of software testing methodologies and the software development lifecycle.
- Experience working within Agile development teams.
- Strong analytical, problem-solving and communication skills.
- Willingness to work onsite in Johannesburg five days per week initially.
Desirable Experience
- Experience developing automation frameworks from the ground up.
- Knowledge of C#, JavaScript or TypeScript.
- Experience integrating automated tests into CI/CD pipelines.
- Familiarity with cloud-based platforms and testing environments.
- Experience with performance, security or accessibility testing.
