Safety in line construction is more than policies and procedures. It requires experienced professionals who understand the work, recognize the hazards, and can build credibility with the crews performing it every day.
NG Gilbert is seeking a Regional Safety Specialist to support our line construction operations within an assigned geographic area. In this role, you will work directly with field employees, Forepersons, General Forepersons, Superintendents, operational leaders, and the Health & Safety Team to strengthen safe work practices, identify and control hazards, support regulatory compliance, and help our teams continuously improve.
This is a highly field-focused opportunity for someone with strong knowledge of electric transmission and distribution operations who enjoys being where the work happens. You will spend significant time visiting crews and active job sites, coaching employees and leaders, supporting training and incident investigations, and helping translate complex safety requirements into practical field application.

What You'll Do
Be a Safety Leader in the Field
- Maintain a strong field presence at staging areas, job sites, rights-of-way, substations, and other active work locations.
- Complete crew and job-site visits through safety walks, field observations, and direct interaction with employees and frontline leaders.
- Coach employees and operational leaders on hazard recognition, job planning, risk controls, and safe execution of work.
- Support effective job briefings and reinforce stop-work expectations when immediate high-risk conditions are identified.
- Build credibility with crews and leadership through technical knowledge, practical coaching, and collaborative problem-solving.
Support Electrical & Line Construction Safety
- Support compliance with OSHA 29 CFR 1910.269, 29 CFR 1926 Subpart V, and other applicable construction safety requirements.
- Coach and evaluate electrical safe-work practices associated with transmission and distribution construction, operation, and maintenance activities.
- Support proper application of minimum approach distances, qualified-employee requirements, grounding, equipotential protection, arc-flash protection, and required PPE.
- Evaluate safety practices involving overhead and underground electrical systems, substations, aerial devices, digger derricks, cranes, excavation, rigging, lifting, and conductor pulling and tensioning.
- Support the inspection, testing, tracking, care, storage, exchange, and replacement of rubber insulating equipment.
Coach, Train & Develop
- Lead and support safety coaching sessions, field discussions, stand-downs, tailboards, and other learning activities.
- Assist with onboarding, field evaluations, qualification activities, and practical skills development for employees and frontline leaders.
- Partner with Training and Operations to identify needs based on regulatory requirements, field observations, incidents, operating conditions, and emerging trends.
- Promote learning-focused conversations following events, close calls, good catches, and operational challenges.
Support Incident Response & Learning
- Ensure incidents are reported in accordance with company requirements and investigate minor incidents, close calls, near misses, and good catches.
- Support serious-incident investigations under the direction of Safety, Legal, or designated leadership, including scene assessment, fact collection, interviews, documentation, photographs, and equipment review.
- Help communicate lessons learned, corrective actions, and improvement opportunities to operational leadership and field employees.
Strengthen Compliance & Continuous Improvement
- Conduct job-site audits, crew observations, field verifications, and operational reviews to support consistent execution of regulatory and company requirements.
- Assist operations in identifying gaps involving employee qualification, training, planning, equipment condition, documentation, PPE, tools, and field execution.
- Support customer and regulatory audits, investigations, and compliance activities as assigned.
- Identify recurring trends and opportunities to improve systems, training, procedures, equipment, and work planning.
- Collaborate with Safety, Training, Operations, and Health & Safety leadership on initiatives that improve organizational learning and field performance.
What We're Looking For
- High school diploma or GED required; associate or bachelor's degree in Occupational Safety, Environmental Health and Safety, Electrical Technology, Construction Management, or a related field preferred.
- 3+ years of experience in electric utility transmission and distribution, line construction, electrical utility safety, or comparable field-based safety leadership.
- Strong working knowledge of 29 CFR 1910.269 and 29 CFR 1926 Subpart V, including requirements applicable to qualified employees performing transmission and distribution work.
- Working knowledge of applicable OSHA construction requirements, including fall protection, excavation, cranes and derricks, material handling, PPE, and electrical safety.
- Knowledge of transmission and distribution construction practices, equipment, terminology, and hazards.
- Familiarity with electrical protective equipment, minimum approach distances, grounding, equipotential protection, arc-flash protection, job briefings, and electrical safe-work practices.
- Working knowledge of rubber insulating equipment requirements, including inspection, testing, care, storage, test intervals, documentation, and removal or replacement requirements.
- Experience conducting incident investigations, field observations, compliance audits, safety coaching, and employee training.
- Ability to interpret regulatory requirements and apply them to actual field conditions.
- Strong communication and practical problem-solving skills with the ability to influence employees and operational leaders.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office and digital reporting or inspection systems.
- Valid driver's license required.
Even Better If You Have
- Previous experience as a lineworker, electrical utility safety professional, or safety professional supporting electric transmission and distribution construction.
- Safety certification such as CUSP, CHST, CSP, ASP, or equivalent.
- OSHA 30-Hour Construction training.
- Experience with electrical utility contractor safety programs and customer-specific requirements.
- Experience with overhead distribution, transmission, underground distribution, or substation construction.
- Experience supervising or mentoring field safety personnel.
- Familiarity with Human and Organizational Performance (HOP), Safety Differently, or other learning-focused safety approaches.
- Experience supporting multiple crews, operating locations, customers, or geographic regions.
What to Expect
This is a field-based regional position supporting NG Gilbert line construction operations. Travel of up to 70% is required, with regular time spent at active job sites, staging areas, rights-of-way, substations, and other field locations.
- Frequent outdoor work in varying weather, terrain, and construction conditions.
- Regular walking on uneven terrain, rights-of-way, construction sites, and other active work locations.
- Ability to safely enter and work around active electric transmission and distribution construction operations.
- Ability to climb ladders or access elevated work areas as needed for observation and inspection activities.
- Ability to lift up to 75 pounds and wear required PPE.
- Availability for extended hours, storm response, emergency response, travel, and incident investigation support as needed.
