About the Role
Responsible for assisting in the development of and coordinating the implementation, training, and administration of EHS programs, policies, and procedures designed to promote a healthy environment that encourages injury and accident prevention. Be prompt in responding to reported accidents in order to determine the root cause and evaluation of current safety practices. Offer a safe and hazard-free working environment to workers in the workplace.
Essential Functions and Responsibilities
The following are fundamental duties that an individual who holds the position must perform. This is not an exhaustive list. Other duties, in addition to essential job functions, will be assigned at the discretion of the Safety Director.
- Maintains an in-depth knowledge of all local, state, and federal laws that regulate the safety and health of employees.
- Performs inspections and audits of work environments, equipment, and processes to identify safety and health concerns and to ensure compliance with established policies, industry standards, environmental, and occupational health and safety requirements.
- Develop and present safety training material to new and established employees, managers, and supervisors.
- Maintain accurate safety and training records.
- Develop, update, and manage workplace safety programs, policies, and procedures designed to prevent injuries and ensure regulatory compliance.
- Assists managers, supervisors, and employees in identifying workplace hazards and solicits input to create a safe work environment.
- Promotes appropriate safety practices through research, communications, training materials, safety programs, etc.
- Monitors and reports accidents and violations, propose disciplinary actions, and countermeasures when appropriate.
- Promotes safety through direct interaction with employees.
- Recommends solutions to improve operations and work practices that will eliminate or mitigate injuries and accidents.
- Analyzes accident and injury investigation data to identify causes and recommends corrective action.
- Performs other related duties.
QUALIFICATIONS
To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.
KNOWLEDGE AND SKILL REQUIREMENTS
- General knowledge of job safety analysis and hazard identification and assessment.
- General knowledge of OSHA and Environmental rules and regulations related to the manufacturing industry.
- Ability to develop and implement policies and procedures
- Self-motivated and able to work independently
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills
- Excellent organizational skills – ability to prioritize and meet deadlines
- Excellent inter-personal skills – ability to establish rapport and interact effectively with plant management, corporate management, and vendors
- Strong computer skills – ability to write procedures, store and manipulate data, prepare reports and analyses, etc. Proficiency with Outlook, Word, and Excel is a must. Experience with Access and PowerPoint is a plus.
- Good reasoning, evaluative and problem-solving skills

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS
- A bachelor’s degree in EHS Management, Engineering or a related area of study
- Or at least 5+ years related experience working in safety, environmental, or health management and compliance.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.
- Safe work practices and be able to lift up to 75 pounds or greater at times.
- Must be able to climb and work from ladders at heights up to 30 feet and perform tasks at working heights up to 40 feet.
- Bending, squatting, and twisting of the body will occur.
PREREQUISITES
- Successful completion of a pre-employment physical and drug screen, physical aptitude test, and background check upon acceptance of a conditional employment offer.
- Must possess a valid Iowa Drivers License.
