Senior Backend Developer (Node.js)

About the Role

Our client is looking for a highly skilled Senior Backend Developer with expertise in Node.js to join their thriving engineering team. This role will involve designing, developing, and deploying scalable server-side applications and APIs that power their innovative platform. The position offers a hybrid work arrangement, allowing for a balance of in-office collaboration and remote flexibility, centered around our Paarl, Western Cape location. You will be a key contributor, working on challenging technical problems, mentoring junior developers, and ensuring the performance and reliability of our backend systems. The ideal candidate is passionate about building robust, efficient, and maintainable code.

Key Responsibilities

• Design, build, and maintain efficient, reusable, and reliable Node.js code.


• Develop and integrate RESTful APIs and microservices.


• Manage database interactions (e.g., PostgreSQL, MongoDB) and ensure data integrity.


• Implement security and data protection measures.


• Optimize applications for maximum speed, scalability, and reliability.


• Collaborate with frontend developers and other team members to define APIs and application functionality.


• Write unit and integration tests to ensure code quality.


• Participate in code reviews and provide constructive feedback.


• Mentor junior backend developers and contribute to team knowledge sharing.

Requirements

• Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience.


• Minimum of 5 years of professional experience in backend development, with a strong focus on Node.js.


• Proven experience in building scalable APIs and microservices using Node.js and frameworks like Express.js.


• Proficient in database technologies, including relational (e.g., PostgreSQL, MySQL) and NoSQL (e.g., MongoDB).


• Experience with cloud platforms (AWS, Azure, or GCP) and containerization (Docker) is a plus.


• Solid understanding of asynchronous programming, event-driven architecture, and common design patterns.


• Familiarity with version control systems (e.g., Git).


• Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.


• Excellent communication and teamwork skills.
