As our Senior Cyber Security Engineer, you will support the strengthening of Stonnington’s cyber security capability, resilience and confidence across the Technology Enablement team, and wider organisation. Working within the Technology Engineering unit, you will help protect Council services from current and emerging threats by developing and improving security frameworks, tools, controls, assessments and incident response practices.
In this role, you will work closely with our other Senior Cyber Security Engineer to provide expert advice, translate complex technical information into practical guidance, improve cyber security policies and standards, and support staff and stakeholders to manage cyber risks that they can be exposed to.
You will also lead key security engineering activities, work closely with Council’s external Security Operations Centre provider, and contribute to safer, more reliable and trusted services for the community.
Key Responsibilities:
- Lead security assessments for Council services, providing clear recommendations that strengthen controls, reduce risk and support continuous improvement.
- Coordinate regular security and vulnerability assessments, and plan future mitigation works based on risk, business impact and assessment outcomes.
- Ensure remediation and mitigation activities are planned, prioritised and tracked to support informed risk management and service resilience.
- Provide decision-makers with clear advice, recommendations and reporting on cyber security risks, priorities and improvement opportunities.
- Contribute to the development, implementation and continuous improvement of Council’s cyber security practice, framework, policies and standards.
- Support the multi-year strategic direction of the cyber security function, ensuring governance aligns with Council priorities, Victorian Government expectations and recognised good practice.
- Take ownership for responding to and mitigating cyber security threats proactively and reactively, including working with state and federal government bodies where required.
- Develop and maintain Council’s security operations playbook, resources, automation and simulation testing to support rapid containment, recovery and continuous improvement.
- Develop strong working relationships with Council’s external Security Operations Centre provider and support effective incident response activities.
- Lead the development and ongoing engineering management of Council’s security tools and platforms, ensuring they are effectively designed, implemented and maintained.
- Contribute to cyber security learning content and communications, translating highly technical information into practical, real-world guidance for different audience.
- Lead the prioritisation and introduction of new security controls in line with Victorian Government and Council security management framework.
Join us in this full-time permanent role, offering a competitive salary range of $131,259.47 - $146,126.56 plus 12% superannuation and a monthly accrued day off.
What you’ll need to succeed:
- Significant experience in cyber security, infrastructure, network administration or security engineering, with a proven ability to identify, assess and remediate cyber security risks.
- Demonstrated experience conducting security assessments, coordinating vulnerability assessment activities and planning mitigation works based on risk and business impact.
- Demonstrated experience developing or improving cyber security frameworks, governance arrangements, policies, standards, reporting and operational practices.
- Experience managing or engineering security tools, platforms, controls, playbooks, automation or incident response resources.
- Strong stakeholder consultation and communication skills, including the ability to translate complex technical information into clear, practical advice for varied audiences.
- High level written communication skills and attention to detail, ensuring cyber security communications are accurate, accessible and well understood.
- Experience working with external providers, including Security Operations Centre partners, and supporting incident response, containment, recovery and continuous improvement activities.
- Certifications in cyber security, network engineering, security operations or ITIL are highly regarded.
