The Retail Business Platform team at Albert Heijn is looking for a skilledSenior Data Engineerto lead the technical execution of data engineering initiatives in a modern, cutting‑edge technology landscape (Azure, Microservices, Databricks).

You’ll play a key role in a complex domain that supports critical applications relying on robust and scalable dataflows across the organization. This is a hands‑on leadership role where you’ll drive the design and implementation of data pipelines, improve platform reliability, and mentor engineers across squads. Your work will directly impact how Albert Heijn leverages data to reinvent food retail in the Netherlands.

As a Senior Data Engineer in the Retail Business Platform, you’ll be at the heart of this transformation - designing, building, and optimizing scalable data solutions that power our decision‑making and customer experiences. You’ll work closely with engineering manager, architect, and product owner to shape the technical direction of our data framework and lead by example in execution.

Key responsibilities of your role.

Technical Leadership & Execution:

  • Design, develop, and maintain robust data pipelines and scalable data marts using Azure and Databricks
  • Implement data quality frameworks, monitoring systems, and automated validation processes
  • Optimize data workflows for performance, reliability, and fault tolerance
  • Apply DevOps practices including CI/CD, version control, and infrastructure automation

Platform Optimization & Innovation:

  • Contribute to architectural decisions and platform evolution to support growing business needs
  • Evaluate and integrate new technologies to improve data processing and analytics capabilities
  • Ensure platform scalability and resilience through proactive performance tuning and incident resolution

Collaboration & Mentorship:

  • Collaborate with product owners, analysts, and business stakeholders to translate requirements into technical solutions
  • Mentor junior and medior engineers, fostering a culture of technical excellence and continuous learning
  • Act as a technical lead in projects, ensuring alignment with strategic goals and engineering best practices

Requirements.

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Data Engineering, or a related field
  • 5+ years of experience in data engineering, with strong hands‑on expertise in:
  • Cloud Platforms: Azure (Data Factory, Data Lake, Event Hubs)
  • Big Data Tools: Databricks, Spark, Delta Lake
  • Programming Languages: Python (PySpark), SQL
  • DevOps & Automation: CI/CD pipelines, Git, GitHub Actions, Terraform
  • Data Modeling: Dimensional modeling, star schemas
  • Monitoring & Observability: Logging, alerting, and performance tuning using tools like Azure Monitor, Prometheus, Grafana
  • Workflow Orchestration: Azure Data Factory pipelines
  • Testing & Validation: Unit testing, data validation frameworks, schema enforcement
  • Experience with real‑time and batch data processing
  • Strong understanding of data governance, privacy, and compliance principles
