Summary

Senior Data Engineer building and operating a Snowflake-centered cloud data platform for an entertainment/motion-picture technology client (IMAX): developing ETL/ELT pipelines, data models, lineage documentation, and orchestration with SQL, Python, and tools like Airflow, Dagster, and dbt. Work-from-home or remote option is offered.

We are looking for Senior Data Engineer to join Cinema team 😊

About our Client
Our client is an entertainment technology company, specializing in motion-picture technologies and large-format motion-picture presentations.

About the Role
We are seeking a Senior Data Engineer to join our growing data team and help build, operate, and improve a modern cloud data platform centred on Snowflake. This role focuses on delivering reliable data pipelines, practical data models, and trusted datasets that support analytics, reporting, business intelligence, and data-driven decision-making across the whole Enterprise while serving as a technical partner to the Data Architect.
The ideal candidate has hands-on experience with SQL, Python, ETL/ELT development, and cloud data warehouses. They can independently drive and deliver well-scoped data engineering solutions while collaborating with business stakeholders, data analysts, data scientists, software engineers, and more experienced data team members.

Role Scope
· Drive the technical delivery of complex data engineering initiatives, taking ownership of solution implementation, technical analysis, and engineering recommendations.
· Partnering with the Data Architect to solve enterprise designs and continuous improvement, with support from experienced team members for broad architecture, platform standards, and roadmap decisions.
· Research and evaluate new technologies, engineering practices, and solution approaches that enhance the enterprise data platform.
· Champion continuous improvement of engineering practices, data quality, testing, documentation, and operational excellence across assigned initiatives.
Key Responsibilities
· Lead the development, testing, deployment, and maintenance of ETL/ELT data pipelines using modern data engineering practices.
· Create and maintain technical documentation, data dictionaries, lineage notes, operational runbooks, and workflow diagrams for assigned work.
· Develop a strong working understanding of end-to-end IMAX business processes, operational workflows, and key data domains to ensure data pipelines, transformations, and curated datasets accurately reflect the business context behind the data.
· Analyze, document, and maintain contextual data lineage across IMAX legacy systems and modern data platforms, including source-to-target mappings, transformation logic, system dependencies, and known data-quality nuances that are critical for trusted reporting, reconciliation, and migration work.
· Lead, build and maintain Snowflake tables, views, transformations, data models, and data marts for analytics and reporting.
· Lead, implement and maintain data ingestion from databases, files, APIs, and structured or semi-structured data feeds.
· Lead, develop and maintain orchestration workflows using tools such as Airflow, Dagster, dbt Cloud, or similar platforms within established team practices.
· Lead the optimization of data pipelines by proactively improving performance, reliability, observability, scalability, and operational efficiency.
· Write maintainable SQL transformations and Python scripts for data movement, automation, validation, and integration tasks.
· Partner with business and technical stakeholders to understand business objectives, lead technical discovery, evaluate solution approaches, and translate requirements into scalable enterprise data solutions in partnership with the Data Architect.
· Apply data quality checks, follow governance and security standards, and support improvements in data reliability and trust.
· Participate in code reviews, testing, peer design discussions, and continuous improvement of team data engineering practices.
· Contribute to the evolution of the enterprise data platform by providing technical recommendations, participating in architectural discussions, and supporting the continuous improvement of engineering standards and practices.
· Lead and Deliver Innovation projects with respect to adding more offerings, investigating the use of new tools, and working with Business Leads to understand “the art of the possible” and how we can move IMAX forward
· Partner with Business and It leaders to complete enterprise proposals and Value assessments

Required Qualifications
· Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Information Systems, Data Science, Mathematics, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience.
· 4+ years in data engineering or related roles, including ownership of production pipelines, data models, and technical design, with 2+ years of hands-on experience with Snowflake or a comparable cloud data warehouse in a production or business-critical environment.
· Demonstrated ability to independently lead technical discovery, evaluate engineering solutions, communicate effectively with technical and business stakeholders, and drive complex initiatives in partnership with senior technical and business leaders.
· Solid SQL skills, including joins, CTEs, window functions, aggregations, data transformation patterns, and performance-aware query development.
· Python experience for data pipeline development, automation, testing, validation, API-based ingestion, or file-based ingestion.
· Experience building, maintaining, and troubleshooting ETL/ELT pipelines.
· Familiarity with at least one cloud platform: AWS, Azure, or Google Cloud Platform.
· Experience working with structured and semi-structured data, including JSON, XML, CSV, Parquet, or Avro.
· Foundational knowledge of data warehousing concepts, dimensional modelling, data marts, and data lifecycle practices.
· Experience with Git and collaborative code review workflows.
· Strong analytical, problem-solving, troubleshooting, and communication skills.

Preferred Qualifications
· Snowflake experience beyond core SQL development, such as Tasks, Streams, Snowpipe, Dynamic Tables, query profile analysis, warehouse sizing, or role-based access controls.
· SnowPro Core certification or equivalent demonstrated Snowflake knowledge.
· Experience with dbt or similar transformation and data modelling frameworks.
· Experience with orchestration tools such as Apache Airflow, Dagster, Prefect, or similar platforms.
· Familiarity with CI/CD, automated testing, and deployment practices for data pipelines.
· Exposure to data quality, data observability, metadata management, data cataloging, lineage, or governance tools.
· Experience with BI or semantic-layer tools such as Power BI, Tableau, Looker, or similar platforms.
· Exposure to data lake, lakehouse, streaming, or distributed processing technologies is an asset when relevant to the data platform.

Position Summary
This position is ideal for a data engineer with solid SQL, Python, cloud data warehouse, and Snowflake experience who wants to grow deeper expertise while helping build and operate a modern cloud-based data platform. The role emphasizes reliable delivery, maintainable data pipelines, strong documentation, and collaborative problem-solving, while developing a strong understanding of client's business processes, operational workflows, and key data domains. A key part of the role is analyzing and documenting contextual data lineage across client's legacy systems and modern data platforms, including source-to-target mappings, transformation logic, system dependencies, and data-quality nuances that are critical for trusted reporting, reconciliation, and migration work. This is a role focused on strong execution and business-context awareness rather than platform-wide ownership, formal mentoring, or enterprise-wide technical standards. While the Data Architect retains accountability for the overall architecture, technical standards, and long-term roadmap, this role plays a critical leadership role in shaping, implementing, and continuously improving those solutions through technical expertise, engineering recommendations, delivery leadership, and strong business collaboration.
