Discussion

Summary

Senior Data Engineer at Bendigo Bank serving as a dbt & GCP technical anchor: designing the dbt estate, building scalable BigQuery data pipelines on the bank's GCP Lakehouse, automating testing and CI/CD, securing sensitive banking data, and mentoring squads in analytics engineering.

Closing date: Friday 18 September 2026

We've never been ‘just a bank'. Just like you should never be ‘just an employee'. We're united in our belief that in banking, better can be bigger, and together we're making it happen.

It starts here. With Bendigo Bank… and you.

About the opportunity

Working in a cross-functional, agile team, our Engineers deliver, support, and continuously improve high-quality technology solutions that create meaningful outcomes for Bendigo Bank and its customers.

This role is part of our shift toward becoming a modern technology organisation. We aspire to operate through Team Topologies-aligned teams that are empowered, customer-focused, and measured by their ability to deliver safely, quickly, and reliably.

As a Senior Data Engineer (dbt & GCP Pioneer), you will serve as a technical anchor and subject matter expert driving the evolution of our enterprise data products on our Google Cloud Platform (GCP) Lakehouse. You will set the standard for Modern Analytics Engineering—architecting robust, scalable, and secure data pipelines using dbt Core/Cloud and Data Vault 2.0/Dimensional/medallion architecture on BigQuery.

We are looking for a practitioner who goes beyond routine pipeline maintenance—someone who pioneers best-in-class dbt modelling standards, champions CI/CD automation, optimizes BigQuery performance and cost, and mentors squads in building high-performing data products.

In this role you'll get to

  • Pioneer dbt & Analytics Engineering: Lead the technical design, project structure, and best practices for our dbt estate. Develop reusable macros, custom packages, and modular SQL/Python models to transform complex Raw/Curate data into performant Serve Layers.
  • Architect Scalable GCP Lakehouse Solutions: Design and implement resilient, cost-efficient data pipelines across the GCP ecosystem (BigQuery, GCS, Cloud Run, GKE), optimising for high throughput and analytical performance.
  • Automate Quality & CI/CD ("Data-as-Code"): Drive software engineering excellence by establishing automated testing frameworks (dbt tests, unit tests, data quality assertions) and Git-driven CI/CD deployment pipelines.
  • Security & Data Governance: Implement robust security controls for sensitive banking and customer data (PII/KYC) using BigQuery Policy Tags, Row/Column-Level Security, dynamic data masking, and GCP Dataplex/Knowledge Catalog.
  • Technical Leadership & Mentorship: Elevate the squad's technical capabilities, lead peer code reviews, champion engineering standards, and collaborate with architects and product owners across the bank

What you'll bring to the role

Essential Technical Mastery, Must-Haves:

  • Pioneering dbt Expertise: Extensive, hands-on production experience with dbt (Core or Cloud) at an advanced level—including custom macro development, complex incremental strategies, automated testing frameworks, package management, and dbt project modularisation.
  • Advanced GCP & BigQuery Engineering: Deep expertise in Google Cloud Platform, specifically mastering BigQuery performance tuning, slot management, partitioning/clustering strategies, cost optimisation, and BI Engine integration.
  • Modern Data Modelling & Data Vault 2.0: Proven track record architecting enterprise data models across the entire lifecycle (Raw → Curate → Serve), with deep practical knowledge of Data Vault 2.0 and dimensional modelling (Star Schemas, Conformed Dimensions, SCDs).
  • Software Engineering Mindset for Data: Strong proficiency in Python and advanced SQL, with deep experience in Git workflows, code reviews, automated CI/CD pipelines, and infrastructure-as-code principles.
  • Enterprise Security & Compliance: Hands-on experience securing sensitive financial data using BigQuery Policy Tags, Column-Level Security, and data classification standards.
