Senior Data Engineer — GCP, BigQuery, dbt and Secure Data Systems
Compensation: $50k – $120k • No equity
Senior Data Engineer — GCP, BigQuery, dbt and Secure Data Systems
Leedstrom LLC and Norvissen LLC are consumer-products startups and subsidiaries of their parent company, Dr Jane, Inc. We are actively developing skincare products, with manufacturing partners currently producing product samples, while building the ecommerce and data infrastructure that will support their commercialization.
We are seeking an experienced senior data engineer to join another data engineer and work collaboratively across ecommerce analytics, secure data ingestion, and related healthcare technology.
We expect to begin with limited, clearly defined paid engagements for one or more selected engineers. Initial assignments will be evaluated for technical accuracy, first-pass quality, security judgment, communication, documentation, reliability, and ability to work collaboratively.
Engineers who perform well may receive progressively larger assignments. Exceptional performance may lead to substantial continuing work and ultimately a permanent, full-time, long-term position within the Dr Jane technical team. Leedstrom, Norvissen, and the broader Dr Jane organization have substantial continuing data-engineering requirements.
This opportunity is for named individual engineers who will personally perform the work and report directly to Dr Jane, Inc. or the applicable subsidiary. Payment may be made to the engineer personally or through an agreed corporate entity, but we are not seeking an agency-managed team, outsourced management structure, staffing layer, or arrangement in which another company controls the engineer’s priorities, supervision, access, or communications.
This is a hands-on role for someone who exercises strong independent judgment and produces accurate, implementation-ready work. The successful candidate must examine requirements critically, identify contradictions and security issues before delivery, and reduce the company’s technical-review burden.
Responsibilities
- Work collaboratively with another data engineer while maintaining clear individual responsibility for assigned work.
- Participate in reciprocal peer review with the other data engineer. Peer review does not transfer supervision or authority to either engineer or to any outside entity.
- Design, implement, test, and operate secure event-ingestion services on Google Cloud.
- Build and maintain BigQuery datasets, SQL transformations, and dbt models.
- Integrate Shopify and related ecommerce systems with company-controlled analytics infrastructure.
- Validate event schemas, identifiers, timestamps, consent behavior, attribution, retries, duplicate handling, and failure behavior.
- Implement and operate Cloud Run services and jobs using appropriate service accounts and least-privilege IAM.
- Develop ingestion, reconciliation, monitoring, recovery, and historical-processing workflows.
- Review existing architecture, code, schemas, tests, and technical records.
- Produce clear deployment instructions, testing evidence, operational documentation, and decision records.
- Conduct rigorous peer review and independently verify important technical conclusions.
- Distinguish verified facts from assumptions, recommendations, and proposed work.
- Identify material architecture, security, privacy, ownership, and continuity risks before implementation.
- Help establish durable technical knowledge within the companies rather than concentrating it with any one person.
Required qualifications
- Strong production experience with GCP, BigQuery, dbt, Python, SQL, Git, and Cloud Run.
- Practical experience with IAM, service accounts, secrets management, logging, monitoring, and infrastructure ownership.
- Experience building and validating production data pipelines and API-based ingestion systems.
- Ability to test browser-side events and trace them through server-side ingestion and downstream storage.
- Strong written English and disciplined technical-documentation practices.
- Ability to collaborate effectively with another engineer while independently reviewing technical work.
- Ability to work directly with a United States-based technical owner and communicate primarily through clear written records.
- Demonstrated ability to deliver complete, internally consistent work with minimal corrective review.
- Interest in building a lasting role within a growing group of companies.
Experience with Shopify, Klaviyo, privacy and consent controls, healthcare technology, HIPAA-sensitive environments, document-processing systems, or AI-assisted workflows is helpful.
Engagement and long-term opportunity
- Remote.
- The engagement will be directly with Leedstrom LLC, Norvissen LLC, Dr Jane, Inc., or another affiliated company, depending on the assigned work.
- Competitive compensation based on experience and demonstrated ability.
- Applicants must propose their requested hourly rate in U.S. dollars.
- Initial work will consist of limited, separately authorized paid assignments with defined scope, deliverables, and maximum hours.
- More than one candidate may receive an initial assignment.
- Further work will depend on the quality and reliability demonstrated during those assignments.
- Strong performers may receive progressively broader and longer-term responsibilities.
- Exceptional performance may lead to a permanent, full-time position.
- Selected engineers will join another data engineer and work as part of a collaborative technical team.
- Each selected engineer will be individually identified, approved, and accountable for assigned work.
- Each engineer will report directly to Dr Jane, Inc. or the applicable subsidiary regarding priorities, technical direction, supervision, deliverables, and performance.
- The other data engineer will serve as a collaborator and peer reviewer, not as an intermediary supervisor unless the engaging company expressly establishes a different reporting structure.
- Payment may be made directly to the engineer or through an agreed corporate entity for contracting or administrative purposes.
- The named engineer must personally perform the work. Personnel substitution, delegation, or undisclosed assistance is prohibited.
- A contracting or payment entity may not add personnel, control the engineer’s priorities, supervise the technical work, or interpose itself in communications unless separately authorized in writing by the engaging company.
- Each engineer will receive individual, attributable access appropriate to the assigned work. Shared identities and undisclosed personnel are not permitted.
- All work product and related intellectual-property rights must be assigned to the engaging company. Where a corporate entity is used, the required assignment must be provided by both the named engineer and the contracting entity.
- All work must remain in company-controlled repositories, cloud environments, and communication channels.
- No patient information will be used during recruitment or initial technical assessments.
Application
Please provide:
- Your résumé and LinkedIn or professional profile.
- Your location, timezone, and earliest starting date.
- Your weekly availability.
- Your proposed hourly rate in U.S. dollars.
- Whether you would be interested in a permanent full-time position following a successful initial engagement.
- A concise description of a GCP, BigQuery, or dbt system that you personally designed and built.
- An example of a material technical defect you discovered through your own review before delivery.
- An example of how you tested and documented a production data pipeline.
- The legal person or entity through which you propose to contract and receive payment.
- Confirmation that you will personally perform the work and report directly to Dr Jane, Inc. or the applicable subsidiary.
Shortlisted candidates will receive a small paid technical assessment based on a realistic architecture or implementation artifact. The assessment will evaluate technical judgment, security reasoning, attention to detail, internal consistency, and the ability to return a clean and actionable work product.
