Senior Data Scientist – Fleet Steering Optimization (Freelance, Lisboa – 1 día/semana on-site)
We're looking for a Senior Data Scientist to join a freelance project via Shakers, working with a large international mobility company on fleet steering and purchasing optimization. Requires being on-site in Lisbon once a week; remote the rest of the time.
You'll build the optimization and simulation models that drive fleet steering decisions, translating business objectives into mathematical formulations, and model outputs back into decisions stakeholders can act on. Expect close collaboration with business, engineering, and product, and real ownership of solutions from design through production.
What you'll be doing:
- Designing and iterating on optimization/simulation models for fleet steering and purchasing
- Turning business requirements into mathematical formulations (LP, NLP, integer, dynamic/stochastic programming)
- Taking models into production — deployment, monitoring, ongoing maintenance
- Integrating with existing production systems (Java 17+/21-25)
- Explaining model decisions in business terms to stakeholders
- Using agentic AI tooling (Claude, Copilot) to speed up development
Must-haves:
- 5+ years in data science / operations research, ideally in capacity-planning-heavy sectors (car rental, airlines, logistics)
- Strong mathematical optimization background: LP, NLP, integer, dynamic and stochastic programming, solvers
- Expert Python for modeling and production-grade deployment
- Hands-on Java experience (17+, strong understanding of 21-25)
- Proven end-to-end deployment/monitoring of ML or optimization systems in production
- Exceptional English
- Able to be on-site in Lisbon once a week
Nice-to-haves: spec-driven development, AWS/cloud experience, strong business communication, genuine interest in decision intelligence and AI-driven solutions.
This is a freelance opportunity through Shakers, Europe's tech talent marketplace. You'll work directly on the client's project for its duration, with Shakers handling the admin so you can focus on the work.
