The jobholder is responsible for providing integrated automation expertise in instrumentation and control engineering to ensure the operating condition of all respective equipment supports Borouge’s operations and systems in line with original equipment manufacturer’s user guide, engineering standards, and relevant ADNOC and international standards. This role includes monitoring, maintaining, and carrying out improvements in the safety system to achieve optimum availability; verification and validation of functional safety changes in accordance with international standards (IEC-61511/61508); maintaining backups for the safety system; obsolescence study and budgeting for the safety system; HAZOP and risk assessment for changes in the safety system; and playing the role of system architect to design and implement safety systems for new projects and improvements in the existing plant.

Key accountabilities

  • Suggest modifications for existing setup or the installation of new equipment for the improvement and modernization of the system.
  • Direct the enhancement and tuning of automated hardware and software.
  • Review system status, diagnostic logs, and troubleshoot system issues.
  • Identify major issues and devise short-term and long-term solutions for the issues.
  • Administration or configuration of safety system hardware and software.
  • Review requirements for new equipment or major repairs, evaluate existing as well as new proposals, and make recommendations to the manager.
  • Plan, prepare, and execute system software and hardware updates.
  • Perform obsolescence planning for upkeep of the entire system including hardware and software.
  • Assist in preparation and updating of ISO procedures.
  • Plan and manage vendor notifications issued.
  • Plan and execute upgrades for software of various systems to keep them at the latest supported levels by respective software OEM (original equipment manufacturer).
  • Ensure the operations and maintenance targets for safety system infrastructure are met.
  • Oversee all reliability indices, identify gaps, and provide solutions accordingly.
  • Prepare purchase requisitions.
  • Review tasks and analyze with reference to potential loss and safety hazards including identifying critical tasks.
  • Perform reliability studies to ensure optimum equipment availability.
  • Perform centralized failure data collection, root cause analyses of failures, and suggest solutions.
  • Provide 24/7 telephone and on-call assistance on a rotational basis within the automation reliability engineers team.
  • Monitor the work of external contractors involved in execution of projects.
  • Review and liaise with manufacturers' representatives from a technical viewpoint for all safety system additions or modifications during engineering, installation, and commissioning to ensure Borouge specifications are adhered to.
  • Administer software contracts with various OEMs/vendors to obtain timely support for all systems.
  • Raise technical issues with vendors and implement recommended solutions after validating them.
  • Coordinate routine and planned automation maintenance activities.
  • Assist other engineers in solving technical problems.
  • Liaise with other maintenance and operations personnel to coordinate inter-discipline work activities or to arrange for plant shutdowns, major overhauls, and other maintenance planning activities.

Minimum requirements

  • University degree in electrical or electronic engineering or related discipline.
  • Minimum 8 years of experience in automation engineering for oil and gas or petrochemical industry.
  • Hands-on installation, repair, testing, and maintenance of a wide range of instrumentation and control automation systems.
  • Hands-on and/or theoretical training certificates on Honeywell’s TPS and/or Experion DCS systems.
  • Hands-on and theoretical training certificates on Honeywell’s Experion DCS or ESD systems.
  • Hands-on system configuration, Honeywell FTE Network, Honeywell Service Node, knowledge of Honeywell PHD system.
  • Advanced configuration and troubleshooting skills relevant to SCADA networks such as OPC, Modbus-TCP/IP, and RTU communications configuration; routers, firewalls, and switches (PCN).
  • Hands-on and/or theoretical training certificates on HIMA/Triconex system.
  • Knowledge of system diagnostic capabilities and backup routines to be followed.
  • Knowledge of process alarm rationalization method.
  • Experience in automation safety system implementation and maintenance.
  • Able to troubleshoot equipment problems and perform complex system tests.
  • Technical knowledge of refining production operations and processes.
  • Attention to detail and strong analytical ability.
  • Document system and EDMS knowledge, including how to find work-related documents.
  • Experience in SAP.

Professional certifications

  • Preferably CCNA/CCNP.
  • IEC 61508 / IEC 61511 functional safety certification is preferred.
