Senior Fullstack Product Engineer (Backend Leaning TS/Node)

We are looking for a collaborative Senior Fullstack Product Engineer (backend leaning) to join our Backstage development squads, part of our Platform Developer Experience Organization (PDX).

The Portal for Backstage is our commercial offering built on top of the thriving open-source Backstage framework and extended with the product capabilities that power world-class internal developer portals. Our teams are focused on delivering high-impact, commercial-grade features that help companies of all sizes transform their developer experience. By joining us, you'll shape the product experience for Portal customers while also contributing directly to the evolution of the open-source Backstage framework that underlies it.

Main Responsibilities

• You will be part of a cross-functional team of engineers, product managers, and designers working closely with internal customers and the open-source community.
• Design, build and maintain backend systems and APIs, primarily using TypeScript, Node.js, and other modern web technologies.
• Build and operate infrastructure, toolset and deployment pipelines.
• Collaborate with other engineers, product managers, and designers to identify and solve challenges, creating an awesome engineering experience.
• Deliver testable, maintainable, and high-quality code, and take operational responsibility for the services owned by your team.
• Contribute to technical RFCs and documentation to align approaches across the team and broader organization.
• Advocate for unification of infrastructure, tools and languages where clients are similar in structure to lower the cost of ownership and increase the speed of the adopting teams.
• Participate in meetings with cross-functional teams and key stakeholders at all levels.
• Raise the bar on engineering quality through code review and technical design feedback, and pragmatic improvements to how the team works.

Key Requirements

• You have 5+ years of experience working hands-on as a Software Engineer in an agile environment.
• You have solid backend experience with TypeScript and Node.js, and are comfortable working across the stack with React.
• You are passionate about software architecture, particularly on the backend: API design, data modelling, and service reliability.
• Comfortable around infrastructure and operating CI/CD pipelines, you enjoy both software development and operations.
• You have practical knowledge or experience with Backstage and are enthusiastic about improving developer tooling.
• You value writing high-quality, testable code and are comfortable owning your work, from development to production.
• You enjoy supporting peers and engineering teams, fostering best engineering practices.
• You have impact through your communication skills and love sharing your knowledge with others, helping them grow.
• If you have a history of contribution or other direct engagement with open-source projects, that would be a huge plus!
• You take ownership of outcomes, not just tasks: you follow problems through to resolution and bring others along with you.
