Senior Principal Software Engineer, Ruby
procore Senior Principal Software Engineer, Ruby
We’re looking for a Senior Principal Software Engineer to join Procore’s Workflows team. In this role, you’ll have the unique opportunity to drive the next generation of construction platform initiatives in a global SaaS infrastructure. You’ll work with our dedicated and talented team spanning Engineering, Product Management, UX and Architects to create and scale the next generation Procore experience on our web platform. You’ll bring your deep experience in Web, Backend, UI/UX, Micro Front-end and MicroServices to evolve our platform.
As a Senior Principal Software Engineer, you will be primarily responsible for establishing the strategic technical direction, creating reference patterns, and will be additionally responsible for actively hands-on execution of that strategy for one of Procore’s core product areas. This is a great opportunity to use your leadership, interpersonal, and organizational skills to build highly effective systems and practices, foster collaborative relationships, and measure value delivered to our customers.
This position reports to the Engineering Director and will be a 2 day per week hybrid role located in the Austin Texas office. We’re looking for someone to join our team immediately.
What you’ll do:
At Procore, AI isn’t a specialized tool, it's a core competency. We expect every team member to be AI-literate, leveraging generative tools and agentic workflows to move faster and work smarter. You won’t just use AI; you’ll be building the agentic future of construction and set the technical direction the rest of engineering follows.
What You'll Do:
- Own the multi-year technical vision and architecture for foundational platform services that power the industry's most complex construction workflows — spanning products, organizations, and modalities (web, mobile, API, and agentic surfaces)
- Set company-wide architectural direction, standards, and patterns; identify and resolve the highest-leverage, highest-ambiguity technical problems across the engineering organization before they become blockers
- Act as the final technical authority on the most consequential design decisions, driving alignment across multiple engineering divisions on distributed systems, platform, data, and AI/agentic architecture
- Serve as a force multiplier: mentor and grow Principal and Staff engineers, cultivate the next generation of senior technical leaders, and raise the engineering bar through architecture reviews, design councils, and technical strategy forums
- Define Procore's approach to AI-native engineering — from agentic development workflows in the SDLC to production agentic systems in the product — and evangelize adoption across P&T
- Remain hands-on where it matters most: prototyping high-risk/high-reward bets, unblocking critical initiatives, and writing code and design documents that serve as exemplars for the organization
- Partner directly with the VPs, and product/UX/business executives to shape corporate and product strategy; translate strategic objectives into a coherent, durable technology strategy and hold the organization accountable to it
What we’re looking for:
- Bachelors or Masters Degree in Computer Science, a related field, or comparable work experience
- 15+ years of software engineering experience building and operating large-scale, distributed, full-stack systems, including 5+ years operating at Principal level or above with organization-wide or company-wide technical scope
- A track record of defining and delivering multi-year technical strategies that materially changed the trajectory of a business — including platform consolidations, re-architectures, or new-category product platforms at scale
- Deep, current expertise across the modern stack (e.g., Ruby on Rails, Go, Java, Node.js, Python; React, TypeScript) with mastery of distributed systems design, resilience, scalability, and operational excellence
- Demonstrated leadership in AI-native engineering: hands-on experience architecting agentic AI systems, integrating LLMs into products, and transforming SDLC practices with AI tooling — not just prototyping, but shipping and operating at scale
- Recognized technical authority beyond your immediate organization — evidenced by influence across divisions, industry presence, patents, publications, open-source leadership, or comparable impact
- Exceptional judgment in navigating ambiguity: the ability to identify the problems that matter most, frame them for executives and engineers alike, and drive decisions that stick
- Executive-level communication and influence: comfortable presenting technical strategy to the C-suite and board-level audiences, aligning stakeholders across the enterprise, and championing a culture of engineering excellence and well-managed systems
