Senior Software Engineer
Summary
A hands-on senior full-stack engineer at Great Ormond Street Hospital Charity, building and running production software, APIs, integrations and AWS infrastructure for its data transformation programme. Day to day spans front-end, back-end and cloud work with Python, TypeScript/Node, React, PostgreSQL, Terraform and AWS, in a hybrid London-based team.
Great Ormond Street Hospital Charity is looking for a Senior Software Engineer to join our Digital Experience Engineering team and play a key role in Driven by Data, our digital and data transformation programme.
You'll initially have a major focus on Seamless Data—modernising how data moves between our systems and partners by replacing fragmented, manual integrations with secure, reliable and scalable services.
But the opportunity is broader than one programme. As a permanent member of our Engineering team, you'll work across software, integrations, cloud technology and digital experiences—taking technical ownership of projects and helping shape the engineering standards and technology that support GOSH Charity's future.
- Design, build, test and run secure, production-grade software across front-end, back-end and integration services.
- Take technical ownership of projects from discovery and architecture through to deployment and ongoing support.
- Design and build APIs, integrations and automations that connect our systems and external partners, including work within our Driven by Data transformation programme.
- Build and operate solutions in AWS, using modern DevOps and Infrastructure as Code practices.
- Contribute to our digital experiences, including our website and future web technologies, working with multidisciplinary teams to build solutions around user needs.
- Make pragmatic architectural decisions, balancing user and organisational needs with security, accessibility, resilience, maintainability and cost.
- Help shape engineering standards across code quality, testing, security, observability, documentation and deployment.
- Mentor and support other engineers through code reviews, architecture discussions and collaborative problem-solving.
- Explore emerging technologies and approaches where they add genuine value, including automation, event-driven architecture and the responsible use of AI.
- Work with technical and non-technical stakeholders to understand the problem behind the request and develop solutions that deliver meaningful outcomes.
- Strong experience delivering complex, production-grade software from technical design through to deployment and support.
- Strong full-stack engineering experience, with the ability to architect solutions across both front-end and back-end technologies.
- Experience designing and delivering REST APIs and systems integrations, including third-party or legacy systems.
- Strong experience designing and operating production workloads on AWS.
- Experience using Infrastructure as Code, ideally Terraform.
- Strong professional experience with Python and another backend language, alongside modern front-end development using frameworks such as React or Svelte.
- Strong DevOps experience and a you build it, you run it approach to engineering.
- Experience implementing event-driven or distributed systems.
- Strong understanding of software architecture, systems design, security and the trade-offs involved in building scalable, maintainable services.
- Strong stakeholder management skills, with the ability to collaborate with technical and non-technical colleagues and explain technical decisions clearly.
