Senior Software Engineer (Offshore)

Discussion
Talent Right is proud to partner exclusively with Road Tanker Systems to recruit their first dedicated engineering hire.

You will work directly with the founder, who is technical and will be writing code right alongside you. He is looking for an engineer who will question a requirement rather than just build it, speak up when there is a better solution, and take real ownership of a product instead of just completing tasks.

If you want tight specs, a defined lane, and someone telling you exactly what to build, this role is not for you, we are looking for an ownership mindset and not someone clocking on/off a shift. If you want to secure a seat at the table where your thinking changes what gets built and your insights are heard, keep reading.

About Road Tanker Systems (RTS)

Road Tanker Systems is a New Zealand SaaS business building software for bulk fuel logistics, the tanker fleets that move fuel around New Zealand and Australia.

It was started by a mechanical engineer who began his career inside a fuel logistics business, built a tool to solve a problem he had seen first-hand, and found the rest of the industry had the same problem. The first product is well established with fuel tanker operators across New Zealand, and Australia, a much larger market, is the growth focus from here.

The second product is in early stages, this is where you come in to drive forward the future of the next phase in their software growth strategy.

The team is small: the founder full-time, a fractional CTO, and a sales lead. This is the first engineering hire, and the plan is to build an engineering team around this person, so you will have a say in who gets hired as the team builds.

About the Role

You report directly to the founder, and the fractional CTO provides part-time technical guidance.

Your time splits across two SaaS products and the engineering foundations underneath them.

The first is the established in-market product, used to optimise tanker loads within legal weight limits. It is mid-migration to a more modern stack.

The second is a newer product supporting fuel delivery planning and logistics. It is in active development, and the next release is the current focus.

Alongside the products, two areas are yours to shape. AI-assisted development is already part of how the team works, and you will set the rules, patterns, guardrails, and pipelines that let RTS build with coding agents safely and consistently. You will also own what runs in production: CI/CD on GitHub Actions, infrastructure across Azure and Vercel, and the design of alerting and monitoring.

Your output here is not measured in lines of code, but in time spent on architecture, on process, and on working out whether what's being developed is robust and fit for purpose, your insights and thoughts matter in this truly collaborative startup environment.

Whilst you will plug into NZ operating hours, there is no expectation of working overtime or long hours, but there is the expectation that you will do what you need to do to get the job done and use your initiative.

Responsibilities
  • Write, ship, and maintain production code across both products
  • Own architecture and solution design, and turn business requirements into technical ones
  • Define how RTS builds with AI coding agents, including standards, guardrails, and tooling
  • Maintain CI/CD, cloud infrastructure, alerting, and monitoring
  • Plan, estimate, document, and keep the backlog groomed
  • Flag early when a sprint is undefined rather than working around it
  • Drive process improvements, from researching AI tooling to building dashboards
  • Help set the engineering culture and ways of working from scratch
The Ideal Candidate

✔ 5+ years of professional senior software engineering experience
✔ You ask questions before you start, and push for clarity rather than assuming
✔ You are comfortable raising thoughts and insights with the founder and CTO
✔ You take ownership end to end. If a requirement arrives with a mistake in it, you flag it rather than building the mistake
✔ You resolve ambiguity instead of coding around it
✔ You would rather over-communicate than leave someone guessing
✔ You have worked in a startup, a small team, or as a contractor, and you know that pace
✔ You have led or developed a project or initiative off your own back, whether that is improving monitoring, cutting hosting costs, or fixing a broken process, and you can talk about why you did it

Clear, confident spoken English is essential. You will be in live conversation with the founder daily, so the ability to build a solid relationship will be created in this safe and collaborative workplace.

On the technical side, we are looking for strong React, Next.js, TypeScript, and .NET, along with automated testing and TDD, and hands-on experience with AI coding agents such as GitHub Copilot, Claude, or Codex. Working knowledge of SQL, Azure, Vercel or equivalent, GitHub Actions, and New Relic is expected. Tailwind, Python, Azure Functions, React Native, Grafana, and SumoLogic are all nice to have.

If you are coming from a large corporate, you will need to demonstrate that you are ready to be closer to the coal face of projects, but ideally we are looking for someone who has worked in a startup environment or with smaller clients, as you are not a cog in a big wheel where mistakes can be hidden and accountability is not required, you are truly part of the foundations and the future of the products.

Why Road Tanker Systems?
  • Genuine ownership of architecture, standards, tooling, and ways of working
  • AI-native environment where coding agents are already part of daily development
  • First engineering hire, with a clear path to leading a team as it grows
  • Direct access to the founder, with a real voice in what gets built
  • Fully remote, with Philippine/NZ business hours
  • 6 to 12-month initial contract, with the firm intention of moving to a full-time arrangement
  • Tools you would expect: Confluence, Jira, Slack, and Miro
How to Apply

If you are an engineer who takes ownership, asks the hard questions early, and wants a seat where your thinking actually counts, we want to hear from you.

Please submit your CV and a brief cover letter to Emily Wheeldon (Regional Recruitment Manager, Talent Right) outlining why you would be a strong fit for Road Tanker Systems.

Shortlisted applicants will be asked to complete a short recorded video interview as the next step in the process. Applications that do not complete this step will not progress.
